Dear Subinay, The moment I heard about your passing was also the moment I heard of Biden becoming the US President elect. Could you imagine how confused and numbed I was? I was speechless and I had a restless night ... Those days I was looking at our communications, on email, on FB, on WhatsApp ... your last email to me was the one you shared your concern about the impact of COVID lockdown on your dense Bangladesh, you asked me to keep this in mind as we are preparing for our CPD. You promised us that you would be back. Soon. I know if we ask people to pick three words that describe you, mine would be 'kindness', 'integrity' and 'humbleness'. I know if you heard me saying this, you would smile, a gentle and kind and humble smile ... The last time you were in Bangladesh, I invited you to stay at my house. You said 'next time' as that time you needed to stay close to your relatives. I said 'ok' without knowing, there would be no next time ... And the book you gave me ... I haven't finished it and I don’t think I will finish it. At least for now. I never told you that when I learned that I would come to Bangladesh, I asked myself who I’ve known as Bangladeshi, you came to mind and I knew right there and then, that my time in Bangladesh would be fine ... Please be well up there and know that we are down here celebrating your life. I am proud and grateful to have known you ... and please give us some light and insights as we finish what you have started … our next CPD for Bangladesh will be dedicated to you ... With loving memories ...

I am simply shocked and saddened at the death of a golden son of our soil, Subinay Nandy. A perfect gentleman, as he was with impeccable personalities, we lost in him a person with great human quality, intelligence, and fortitude. He visited me once in my Planning Commission office and I was charmed by his depth of knowledge and humbleness. He promised me that next time he visits Bangladesh in connection of the preparation of CPD, he will talk to me again. This reminds of the famous saying that “Man proposes, God disposes”. May his soul rest in peace. And our thoughts and prayers are with his family members. You will be sadly missed.

I have known Subinay Da for more than two decades and from well before I joined the UN system. A chance encounter in a flight from New York to New Delhi when we happened to sit next to each other. Since that day, we remained in touch on and off. He was a Menor and elder brother to me, rejoiced my posting in Bangladesh and we met each time he came to Dhaka. Whenever I had a problem to deal with with no easy answers, he was my 'go to' person - always guiding me with my best interests in mind. Whenever I appeared in any Bangla Channel programmes, he would write to me with words of encouragement. I cannot just believe I am not going to have him again to help me navigate through life's challenges. Will miss you Subinay Da This picture is from his last visit to my residence in Dhaka earlier this year.
