Ernie Montero

January 2, 1959 - December 29, 2020

Ernie was one of the most caring, selfless and knowledgeable people you could ever meet, and he could never do enough for you. His passion for music & sound was evident in all he did, as was his generous and kind nature. He imparted countless amounts of knowledge on colleagues and students alike and his face lit up when he was sharing his pearls of wisdom and seeing people grasp it. A dear friend, colleague and wonderful human being.

I left PRC in 2012 after having spent two years on the Music Tech course, in that time I remember that Ernie was consistently one of the background heroes of the department. If there was an amp not working, a speaker that had blown or a faulty fader he'd be there working on it. The whole department kept running on the back of his engineering expertise. Even after having left for University in London at the end of 2012 I would frequently go back to the college to visit Ernie every summer and we'd talk for at least a couple of hours about the topics of the day and I learned a great deal from him, he had an encyclopaedic knowledge of Roman and Greek history and was particularly fond of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. At some point after Coronavirus I planned to pay him a visit once again until I was devastated to learn through a friend that he'd passed away. Still it was a pleasure to have known him at all.

I first met Ernie when I was studying at Peterborough Regional College, at the age of 16. I remember practicing the bassline for 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division in the main practice room, down the Performing Arts Corridor. He smiled and struck up a conversation about Joy Division. He'd often have a catchphrase, when I would come in some mornings, whether it was a curly guitar lead I was using, or wearing a pair of red jeans he would always say humorously "Hey Andy man, you like that because it's retro?" it soon became an inside joke of ours, I warmed to Ernie pretty quickly. I would often visit him in his office on my lunch break, he was so knowledgeable about the music tech side of things, he'd regularly give me amazing tips and advice. He also fixed my KRK Studio Monitors free of charge, he said "Just bring them in Andy my friend and I will have a look at them for you" Ernie and I started hanging out together outside of college, I'd enjoy drinking with him at gigs, he would tell me some intriguing and funny stories. I would always sit and talk with him for hours at Thorney Charity Music Festival every year, I'd often bump into him at Motor City Vipers gigs also. He was a wonderful friend and such a genuine, intelligent and caring guy. He will be sorely missed. RIP Ernie

Ernie was one of life's good guys and it has been a pleasure to have known him. He will be sorely missed at our annual Thorney Live Charity Music Festival where he gave his time for free working on the stage and behind the sound desk. I have fond memories of days and evenings out with Ernie, mainly with the Motor City Vipers and various local festivals working together. Ernie had an immense knowledge of sound and lighting and could fix anything giving it the 'Ernie Montero Touch'! A true gentleman, thank you for being my friend.

I had the honour of having Ernie as part of my viper family. Always a pleasure to spend time with and consistently making those small kind gestures that make a big difference, every gig without fail he would insist on plugging in all my equipment and packing it away for me. A small thing that Ernie did every time we gigged that left me feeling cared for, he had that way of making people feel special. Ernie picked my name for secret Santa 2 years running and each time he picked me a thoughtful generous gift clearly costing over the set amount. It was always clear that if Ernie was given the opportunity to demonstrate that he cared he went beyond. Ernie is iconic, over time he has coined a number of phrases that can only be remembered and thoroughly enjoyed if you think about exactly how Ernie would say it. So that’s how I intend to remember Ernie, as somebody who made me feel cared for and kept me smiling.

I first met Ernie 35 years ago. It didn't take us long to become firm friends. We were both interested in music, politics and eastern philosophy and spent many a wonderful evening chewing the fat, discussing the big ideas. Ernie taught me how to be a better guitar player, debater and human being. I will miss his encyclopedic knowledge of Roman and Greek history. But most of all I will miss his talent in latin guitar. Rest in Peace, my brother.

There is nobody in this world quite like Ernie. He was part of the Motor City Vipers family, knowledgeable, passionate and incredibly good at what he did. It was always a pleasure to talk music and guitars with him, and he will never be forgotten. One in a million.

I was fortunate to get to know Ernie when I studied a short evening course; I had seen him around the college before and exchanged the usual hello’s and greetings as staff do. Over the weeks of the course we became good friends, his infectious enthusiasm was there for everyone to see and he had a wonderful sense of humour. After the course ended, we would often catch up and he invited me along to a few gigs when he was doing the sound. I will remember him as a big-hearted person who had time for everyone. Rest in Peace my friend.

Ernie could make anyone smile with his amazing, quirky personality and attitude to life. Ernie loved Performing Arts and I spent many hours in his 'office' putting the world to rights with him....so many laughs..too many to mention...but never forgotten. I can remember Ernie driving groups of dancers out and about...joining in with the chaos and banter. His sense of humour was nothing short of wicked.. Rest in peace lovely Ernie...I can just picture your face if you could see the beautiful tributes being made in your honour. Un abrazo muy muy grande..xxxx

Such sad news, Ernie was a massive part of my college life, he taught me so much to do with electronics and sound engineering. he taught me how to solder the right way and how to mix. he taught me more than any lecture ever could because he never followed the books, even if he always had something to moan about he was always happy, its thanks to what he taught me that I'm now in the sound industry and i will always be grateful for him and the short time we had together in his office. i hope your up there having a nice glass of whisky playing your guitar. Rest in peace Ernie

I met Ernie about ten years ago when he came over to the electrical workshop. Over the next ten years I would see him in the corridors and I think because of Morecambe and Wise I would sometimes call him Eric and sometimes Ernie. I finally used to remember It was Ernie from the song by Benny Hill. Whether I called him Eric or Ernie he always had a smile on his face and would ask how I was. May he rest in peace.

Ernie called me his adopted daughter by the end of year 2 of my studies and we laughed about the chaos of life.. Ernie and I were very alike and I will miss him very much, i had a huge ammount of respect for him, he stuck up for what he believed in, was highly practical yet still intuitive and had a huge ammount of courage. Ernie was a a true character and had a dark sense of humour that i will never forget! He was honest and proud and i was proud to have known such a knowledgeable and influential character.. He was selfless at the best of times and he left his mark on so many people! You only find an ernie once in a lifetime! If you were thinking it.. he was saying it and with a lot enthusiasm! I remember walking in on my lunch breaks or at home time into his office never knowing what my day would turn out like.. I remember him playing Justin Timberlake on guitar, teaching me how to solder a broken xlr and i will never forget the one day i had the courage to sing my university audition infront of him. Ernie was a character and he was extremely outspoken and he will be extremely missed for his talents, proffessionalism but most of all his personality. Ernie was the glue that kept everything going. He was never fake and never apathetic in a world that so easily is. Charlie nelson

Ernie was a ridiculously patient man and extremely passionate and knowledgable about anything he put his mind to. In the 4-5 years i attended the College I spent a great deal of time talking to ernie. Admittedly 90% was about something else rather than actual college work, and it always came back to roman history (all roads lead to rome!). I know Ernie had a never ending supply of items to repair in some shape-or-manner but you could see his love for getting things back in use (and the insane level of skill and speed at which he did so). I am positive we all have a cable somewhere soldered by Ernie. My favourite memory of Ernie is repeating interaction that, In spite of the clear valley of experience and know-how, he always treated you as an equal and with exceptional attention to fixing or assisting where ever capable. As i am sure anyone who met him is, I am greatly saddened and will miss speaking to him. I am forever grateful I was able to know him feel blessed to have spent the time i did speaking and learning from him. Just like Rome, Ernie will never fall and his influence and passion is most definitely passed to all those who he worked with and taught. magister dixit
