I first met Ernie when I was studying at Peterborough Regional College, at the age of 16. I remember practicing the bassline for 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division in the main practice room, down the Performing Arts Corridor. He smiled and struck up a conversation about Joy Division. He'd often have a catchphrase, when I would come in some mornings, whether it was a curly guitar lead I was using, or wearing a pair of red jeans he would always say humorously "Hey Andy man, you like that because it's retro?" it soon became an inside joke of ours, I warmed to Ernie pretty quickly.
I would often visit him in his office on my lunch break, he was so knowledgeable about the music tech side of things, he'd regularly give me amazing tips and advice. He also fixed my KRK Studio Monitors free of charge, he said "Just bring them in Andy my friend and I will have a look at them for you" Ernie and I started hanging out together outside of college, I'd enjoy drinking with him at gigs, he would tell me some intriguing and funny stories. I would always sit and talk with him for hours at Thorney Charity Music Festival every year, I'd often bump into him at Motor City Vipers gigs also. He was a wonderful friend and such a genuine, intelligent and caring guy. He will be sorely missed.
RIP Ernie
