Valerie Dowling joined the National Museum of Ireland on 26th April 1976 as a Technical Assistant where she worked alongside Brendan Doyle who was the Photographer in the NMI. At that time the photographic studio was based in School House Lane. Valerie worked closely with Brendan for many years over a period where the technology of photography changed dramatically. Valerie continued to build her skills with all these changes in practice ensuring NMI remained at the forefront. When Brendan retired in the 80's Valerie took over as Photographer. Valerie set (and demanded!) high standards of photography, and her work was viewed widely through NMI publications and exhibitions. Valerie was a gifted photographer, worked with military precision and was passionate about the quality of Hasselblad cameras and lenses which she mentioned at every opportunity! She was so pleased and proud to have them in the Museum. Valerie's work led her to engage with colleagues across all areas of the Museum and her passion for her work and professionality was infectious - she will be missed terribly by her colleagues past and present across all our Museum sites.

I only recently heard about Valerie's death. I sat beside her in St. PAUL'S SCHOOL We even did grinds together as we planned our departure from Secondary school. I texted her out of the blue last year and heard back from her. She sounded in great form. She will be dearly missed. 25/11/2020

Unfortunately I only learned about Valerie's passing in Oct. Valerie had contacted me a couple Of month ago and had been texting one another. I know Valerie from primary school and then secondary. Valerie introduced me to an óige and have many great memories of are adventures and friends like France and Paddy Byrne. Mary White Mary Grimes. Wendy Shelvin and great weekend and holidays. VALERIE INTRODUCED ME TO PHOTOGRAPHY AND I HAVE A PICTURE OF MYSELF VALERIE TOOK OF ME ON KILLARNEY LACES. I WILL TREASURE THIS FOR EVER. GOD REST HER SOUL

I am terribly shocked and saddened today to hear of the untimely passing of Valerie. Her family and mine were neighbours and she and I became close childhood friends and hill walking companions. We had much fun and a few scapades together during those years. On behalf of myself and the Dempsey family,our heartfelt condolences to Raymond, Brian and their families on this very sad loss.

We were so shocked to hear of Valerie's death today (14 Oct 2020) and send sincere condolences to all who were close to her, particularly her brothers. Raymond and Brian and their families. We were neighbours and schoolfriends in childhood, occasionally in touch in later years. So glad to have the lovely sepia photographs taken by Valerie on our wedding day. May she rest in peace.
