Robert Van Deursen

Robert was a remarkable academic. He lead the last REF submission for the School with great attention to detail and a passion for quality. He provided support, mentorship and challenge to those he worked with throughout his career. He often talked about his family and his values, which were motivators for how he worked. My thoughts are with his wife and children as they grieve.

So desperately sorry to hear of Robert's passing. He was such an inspirational character who had achieved so much and did so much for our profession. He was a thoroughly respected colleague and valued friend to so many. Sending love and thoughts to Eva and all the family. Emma X

I was sorry to hear of Robert’s passing. He will certainly be missed here at Cardiff, but he will also be remembered by many whose careers he shaped.

Everdien, I am so very sorry for both your and your family's loss. Robert was a lovely man and a fabulous boss when I was lucky enough to work with him for Versus Arthritis for three years. Robert was always very kind and supportive and an absolute font of knowledge. Thinking of you all at this time.

I knew Robert as a fine spirited colleague who was always happy to exchange ideas , in particular , re the Erasmus axis which was seismic to us both when that was consigned to our history rather than an area of growth. A fellow cyclist who was a committed environmentalist; the world has lost a principled, gentle soul. May his legacy endure.

Robert was a good friend, mentor and colleague who supported me throughout my career at Cardiff University. I will always remember his kindness and considered approach. He was a driving force in the school around research and his clarity of thought and energy made a huge difference to how that developed and evolved. However, he also supported and grew scholarship with at least 2 T&S professors in the school being supported by his enthusiasm to see scholarship grow and flourish. He was a man of integrity, passion and warmth who is and will be sorely missed. My sincerest condolences to Robert's family. My thoughts are with you.

Thinking of Robert's dear wife and his dearest friends and family at this very sad time and sending sincere heartfelt condolence. Robert always had such energy and passion for his work and research - and for life - and he inspired so many people. I absolutely loved the energy and passion he put into REF - and the way he made it so understandable for everyone across HCARE - simply brilliant! May these memories of such an amazing and respected man bring you some comfort over the coming months.
