Ion Ionescu

Ion Ionescu, Senior Marine Inspector. Ion was born in Romania, and emigrated to Canada in the 1980s. He was fluent in seven languages, held a Canadian Master Mariner Certificate, and worked on Canadian and foreign ships before joining Transport Canada in 2001 as a Marine Safety Inspector. Described by all who knew him as kind, generous with his time, always willing to help others, friendly and a great friend, he will be missed by us all. He was a dedicated sailor and a stalwart peer.

Myself and Ion came a long way together. We both grew up on the same street in the Ancient City of Constanta by the Black Sea, attended the same Maritime Academy and graduated in the same year. While sailing for several years have kept us apart, in 1990 we met again at Institute Maritime du Quebec in LaSalle, Montreal, where we attended the Tanker Endorsement course. In 2001 he joined TCMSS Ottawa Headquarters and since, being single at that time, I offered him to live at my place; where he stayed until his transfer to Vancouver on March 2003. Professionally in TCMSS, we have always been connected sharing ideas, opinions and solutions. Personally, I lost a colleague and a good friend. May he rest in peace. George A. Ianiev George A. Ianiev
