Peter Krykant

xx xx, xxxx - xx xx, xxxx

As many of you know we lost Peter in the last week. Peter was an incredible campaigner for the rights of communities that use drugs. The opening of the unsanctioned drug consumption van in 2020 had a profound impact not only on the many people who stayed safe when using the van, but also on the debate and the eventual establishment of a sanctioned facility earlier this year in Glasgow. Peter placed himself at great personal risk doing this work, and his work will have a lasting impact in the UK and beyond. Our condolences, thoughts and love are with his family and friends at this very difficult time. Please share your memories and photos of Peter as we remember him and his life.

Condolences

Peter's work will continue to serve as an inspiration to many in the drug policy community and beyond. Thank you for everything.

This amazing man spurred me on to write my Masters dissertation on Drug Consumption Rooms and why they were necessary in Scotland. He took the time to help me as much as he could and I will be forever grateful for everything he did for those who are in need of guidance and protection from the evil that is flooding our streets. No one has the aspiration of being a drug addict. Thank you Peter. Sleep well.

We arranged to go fishing 3 weeks ago through whatsapp. He picked a nice spot in Larbert and sent a photo of it Unfortunately I had some problems with my phone and had to use an old phone that couldn't download whatsapp. I did text Peter though to see if it was close to a train station but I didn't get a reply. I could have chased him up on it but much to my regret I didn't . I knew he loved fishing and tried to rebuild a connection after a conversation with him. So sad for his family but want them to know that I was looking forward to spending time with him in nature

Peter, thank you for the time we could spent together in Barcelona and in Belgium. Your work in the harm reduction field has changed many lives and it will be greatly remembered. You inspired me and you made me reflect about our past, our trauma's and ways to escape the pain. Rest well, beautiful soul. Much love to your two boys.

Peter, thank you for sharing a piece of life with me. One of the things I cherished most when I first got to know you was how you cared — not with grand gestures, but through the everyday. Cooking was one of your love languages: you remembered exactly what each person liked, and paid attention to every ingredient, every detail. You also loved fishing, dancing, and old films. You were terrified of two-wheeled vehicles, so we never rode (two-wheeled) bikes together… but we travelled far. We laughed, danced, cried, dreamed. I was lucky enough to see you happy We messed up. And we showed up. In the last stretch, mostly from a distance, because those of us nearby know just how hard things had become — for you, and for those who loved you. What you loved most in this world was your children. You adored them. It only took one look —when you were with them, or even just talking about them— to see how deep that love ran. And if anything broke your heart, it was not being able to be in their daily lives. So when you sent me photos of you hugging, I got teary. It had been a long time since I’d seen you smile like that. Your children were your engine. But your activism —your fight for the rights of people who use drugs— was your backbone. You spoke your truth loudly, and without filters — about your trauma, your mental health, your time on the streets, and your complex relationship with substances. And you showed up with courage, proving that safe consumption spaces aren’t just necessary —they’re possible. You made them posible in Scotland. And now, you were left behind, and it hurt you, a lot. And you also exposed your own vulnerability in the process. It breaks my heart how unprepared we still are to hold that kind of truth. I will always be grateful to have shared a piece of life with you — and with your children. May your journey be gentle, light and free, my beloved Peter.

We only met twice. Once in Brighton at the Social Justice Conf and then on Zoom with "Radical Acts to Survive." I am thinking of the many who loved you and sending them truck loads of solidarity. Condolences sounds like such a formal word for empathy-the hugely needed trait you gave to our homeless peers-Peter . WHAT A HUGE LOSS to the Harm Reduction Movement too AP, GB, SM, RN and now you too... how do we console one another when our hero's and heroines keep dying prematurely Still, all the love and power to you all to live on strongly fulfilling Peters legacy

So sad to hear you are gone Peter. My own family have lost too many to drugs, and your work was truly revolutionary. Compassion and understanding was at the heart of everything you did. You will be greatly missed. Lots of love to you and your family.

So sad to hear the news of Peter passing, this is a huge loss to the world of drug policy activism. His passion and determination has led to the opening of Scotland's 1st consumption room. His bravery and advocacy is unmatched and i will be forever in awe of him. I'm so happy he was here to see his dream come true. Thinking of his family, especially his beloved sons at this sad time ❤️❤️❤️
