Marielle Dubbeling

Ante el deceso de Marielle Dubbeling, que en su praxis y corto ciclo de vida terrena alcanzó un nivel de conciencia tan alto que refleja hasta dónde puede remontar en grandeza el espíritu humano, con profundo dolor permítanme expresar mi pesar por su pérdida. Y decirles que conocí a Marielle en 1999 cuando me invitó a trabajar con el equipo que formuló el estudio de “AGRICULTURA URBANA EN EL DISTRITO METROPOLITANO DE QUITO. Diagnóstico Situacional. Estudios de Caso Identificados por las Administraciones Zonales”; documento que sustentó luego la propuesta municipal para el Seminario “Agricultura Urbana en las ciudades del siglo XXI” realizado en Quito en el año 2000. Que luego, también bajo su dirección, conjuntamente con Alain Saintandreu, el año 2002, realizamos el estudio DIAGNÓSTICO PARTICIPATIVO SOBRE AGRICULTURA URBANA EN LOS BARRIOS URBANO DE PILANQUI Y PERI-URBANO DE ROMERILLO EN LA CIUDAD DE IBARRA (IMBABURA – ECUADOR), con la intención de impulsar la filosofía y la práctica de la AU en Ibarra, ciudad vecina a Quito; y la Propuesta de implementación del Programa de Agricultura Urbana para el cantón. Posteriormente en mi actividad docente consideré a la AU como un tema relevante del proceso formativo y de investigación de la carrera universitaria en el ámbito agropecuario. Y una vez culminada mi carrera me interesé nuevamente por ella. En ese contexto pude asistir a la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas, HABITAT III, en octubre de 2016, al evento la “Alimentación para las ciudades: el reto del desarrollo sostenible”, promovido por el Municipio de Quito. Y fue para mí muy grata novedad que el proyecto de Agricultura Urbana Participativa AGRUPAR desarrollado por la institución, a raíz del Seminario del 2000, lo presentaba la entidad como la experiencia de un proyecto que había obtenido Mención especial en el Milan Urban Food Policy Pact Awards 2016, en la categoría de producción de alimentos; junto a los proyectos de las ciudades de Gante, Tegucigalpa y Curitiba. Tuve la oportunidad de conversar con Henk Renting, chairman del evento, y le comenté de mi experiencia en el trabajo con Marielle; le pregunté si le conocía; me respondió, “Claro, es mi jefa” y me preguntó mi nombre; le dije: “Miguel Camacho”; y me respondió que ella nos recordaba con afecto y nos saludara. Y ahora que Marielle ya no está físicamente entre nosotros le rindo homenaje de admiración por su talento y bondad. Y de que sí consideran pertinente pediría hacer conocer esos trabajos de AU en Ibarra ─y les enviaría los documentos─ como mi reconocimiento e inmenso afecto a su memoria. Marielle, wat triest dat je zo jong overleden bent. Ik heb en houd erg leuke herinneringen aan je als studiegenootje en mede Droevendaalbewoner, en als een heel positief gedreven persoon. Guido, jij heel erg veel sterkte gewenst, wat ben ik blij dat jij er voor haar was.

I am shocked and saddened by the new of Marielles passing. My sincere condolences to Marielles family and friends.

Just a few days ago a great person fell asleep in death. A great professional and a great contributor to the urban agriculture and city region food systems among others. As sad as it is, it is very comforting to know that our Creator, as loving as He is, and for sure Marielle being a spiritual person knew it, gives her the wonderful opportunity to raise from the dead and live healthy on Earth forever. Great news for her mourners found on the Bible, on John 5:28 and 29 and Psalm 37:29.

Marielle, you were such a wonderful friend and extraordinary colleagues. Thank you smooch for turning our lives and practices more luminous.. and greener. It has been over 20 years since we started contributing to build a better word with many many more of us. Your legacy and inspiration will help me facing a deep sorrow. Yves.

Marielle was such an important leader of the urban agriculture and city-region food systems movements over the past decades. Her passing is a huge loss and I know those of us influenced by her energy, vision and wisdom will carry on her legacy. Marielle and RUAF were great resources for me as a young urban farmer in Toronto and then important partners in Toronto's city-region food system work while I worked with the Toronto Food Policy Council. Through Marielle, our local work was connected to an amazing global network. And through Marielle and the connections she forged, our local work was strengthened, deepened and legitimized. Deepest condolences to Marielle's family and closest colleagues.

Very sad to hear that Marielle passed away, far too young and so much still to give to the world. She was the best of our Tropical Agriculture student group, already then a unique combination of sharp mind, warm heart & spiritual soul. I recently celebrated the wedding of Rabindra in Nepal. It was Marielle who, after her year in India & Nepal, nudged me into sponsoring his going to boarding school. Thank you Marielle for that and more, and Guido, a lot of strength to you and all who will miss her deeply.

With Marielle passing away, we're lost one of the most passionate and aspirational people I've met in driving the urban food agenda. I will, however, rememder Marielle also as a warm, insprirational and original thinker, great to have worked with her.
