John Mumford

I just learned of John’s passing and wish to convey my belated and heartfelt condolences to John’s family and friends. I met John with Nigel Bell ca. 2000 when exploring the prospect of attachment on retirement from the World Bank, where I was charged with designing, and had experience in implementing with others, a training programme for ministers and senior officials on environment and natural resources policy reforms, with reference to sustainability and globalisation, prior to Bank investments. As a tropical ecologist from SE Asia. I could empathise with John’s IPM work in the region. John and Nigel were generous to accommodate me at CEP as visitor after my retirement from the Bank. This experience enabled me to help John design a distance learning MSc on Sustainable Development across faculties, based on the CEP experience, and which is now offered by the University of London. John was a modest, humble, gentle, resourceful and generous person who will be missed by many.

Family, students and friends sorry for loss of Prof. John Mumford. I met John when I was an Msc (Applied Entomology) 1983/84. student at Silwood Park, as our Lecture in Pest management Decision Making, a subject he co-delivered well with Prof Norton; the teachings that changed my life in many ways.I last met him in mid-1990s in Dar es salaam when he was supervising a PhD student. May God be with John's Family during this difficult time and beyond. John Rest In Peace.

Our hearts go to out to John's family. So sorry for your loss. We will miss John and treasure the fond memories we've had with all of you. Words don't suffice...

I was blessed to meet John as my personal tutor during MSc in 2019-2020. He was very supportive and friendly. I greatly appreciated his willingness to always listen about my concerns and offer valuable career and professional advice which had helped me to go through tough times throughout the year. May John rest in peace. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

It took me few weeks to really accept that John is gone. But he will remain in all of our hears. I was one of few John’s last supervised master student at CEP 21/22. He is one of few people that has really led me to a new hope and newfound career breakthrough. I owed him everything I am right now. I pray for John to rest in peace. I wish his family a deep condolences, may they be given strength, patience and life full of love.

In 1998 I moved from physics to take on the daunting challenge of helping to build Imperial's interdisciplinary r&d activities in energy and environment. John was kind and supportive and a wise counsel for the next 11 years. I very much appreciated everything he did for me but more importantly for the impact he had around the world. It is sad that hear that he has gone at only 69 and my condolences to his family.

I was so sorry to hear of the unexpected death of John and send condolences to Megan and family. There are so many wonderful memories of John’s academic expertise and the lasting legacy he will leave behind. As an Administrator I knew a different John and at first found him rather intimidating. Then I saw the twinkle in his eyes and discovered his dry sense of humour. He was very kind to me both as a colleague and friend and of course his bees provided all at Silwood with the most marvellous honey. Thank you John.

My deep condolences go to Johns family during this sad time. I was a secretary for John and Geoff Norton from 1978 - 1992 and John and I shared the same birthday of 4th March. He was a very kind and quiet man as I can remember and extremely well respected by all. Rest in Peace John. I will always remember you.
