My condolences go out to the family. I am so sorry too hear of the lost of a dear loved one to this family. Dealing with this situation can be the hardest thing to face. God's word the bible gives heartfelt and true meaning for ones sleeping in death; Revelation 21: 3,4 says: 3  With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. 4  And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” God also promises a hope for ones to have life again at John 5: 28,29a : Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29  and come out. Johann was een van die mees begaafste muisici van sy tyd wat sy gawes met deurdagtheid en passie uitgelewe het. Sy veelsydigheid as musikus het die spore nagelaat in sy spel as pianis, klavierdosent van faam, komponis asook sy musikologiese vermoens. As mens was hy toegewyd aan goeie verhoudinge , 'n gesonde humorsin en voortdurende dryfkrag om sy beste te lewer. Sy nalatenskap sal ons altyd bybly.

Dis met groot waardering dat ek Johann Potgieter se vormende invloed op my lewe erken, eers as hoof van die musiekdepartement aan die UOVS en as dosent in musiekgeskiedenis, en later as hoogs gewaardeerde vriend. Dit was 'n voorreg om hom te ken. Sy nalatenskap en die mooi herinneringe aan hom is blywend.

Prof Potgieter het vir baie jare waardevolle werk vir die Unisa Musiekdepartement gedoen. Ek sal hom altyd onthou vir sy vriendelike laggie en 'gentleman'-skap as hy hier kom eksamineer het. En hy was so lief vir sy kleinkinders. Ek voel bevoorreg om hom te geken het. My innige simpatie aan die familie.

Dit is 'n groot verlies vir ons musiek lewe.

Continuation ( my previous message went through accidentally too early). I was a student at the Musiek Akademie in Pretoria for 4 years from 1964. I remember him very well; I studied composition with him. He had a very gentle and sweet nature with a very perceptive and deep knowledge of music. It was a great privilege to be able to study under him. I lost touch with him over the years but his teaching and indeed his whole being has remained in my musical inner world. I remember him performing Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. What a talented man he was. I also remember Marlys and very well.
