Ian McDougall

Barb, I am so sorry. It was a real privilege for me to know Ian and to have had him as such an exemplary colleague. His gentle nature and pervasive sense of humour still resonate with me. What a great article and tribute to him on CBC's site today. I could not agree more with the remarks by Cory Weeds, “You could just hear the warmth of his horn and he was like that as a person.” I listen to his CD's regularly. You were such a terrific couple and he will have been fortunate to have had such support from you in these last years. (I so enjoyed my occasional visits out to your lovely house on 10 mile.) I am glad that he is at peace now, and he will live on in all of our memories and through his wonderful music making.

My connection to Ian goes back 60 years to UBC and in the early 70s to the Courtenay Youth Music Camp and Malaspina College (with Pacific Salt). I was delighted when he joined the faculty at UVic! Ian was a giant in the musical spaces he occupied. His gentle personality combined with his huge range of musical abilities made him welcome wherever he went. I was particularly happy to have another Canadian colleague in our otherwise largely American background faculty. I also enjoyed his support of my Chamber Singers in an otherwise "instrumental" School of Music. I will really miss his presence in our retired faculty diaspora. Bruce More

Very sorry to hear of Ian's passing. Deepest condolences to the family. Of course Ian is a legend at the UVic Music School and his name and energy will always resound through the halls!

What a sad day. Ian was a friend, colleague, mentor and inspiration! Whether in a lesson, at a gig, on the golf course or just hanging out with a scotch it was always a pleasure to be in his presence. I know that you are up there blowing him away with his beautiful trombone sound and larger than life personality. RIP my friend.

Dear Barbara, Donald and Nelson, I am so sad to hear of Ian's passing. My heartfelt condolences! I loved having him as a colleague. He was one of the key faculty members during what I regard as the Golden Age of the School of Music--a stellar performer and instructor, a wise administrator, and a great person. I miss him very much. I wish you strength and courage as you mourn this huge loss.

My first encounter with Ian was during an extended lunch meeting at the University of Victoria faculty club. I had recently joined the University as an assistant professor in Engineering and was seeking out connections in the School of Music. I shared my experience as a part-time trombonists in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Ian shared anecdotes of his performing career and how he came to join the School of Music (he checked all the boxes including a Master's degree). I was struck by his energy and humanity. Ian will be sorely missed. My condolences to his family.
