Ian Kennedy

Ian was loved in so many ways. His dedication to his family permeated everything he did. He was also a highly valued member of the Royal Navy, having served for almost 34 years. His caring nature made him an excellent mental health nurse, recognised by the award of the Royal Red Cross, and patients were his primary focus even when he moved into more managerial roles. The impact he made on Navy Healthcare is recognised every day, and this page is an opportunity for his friends to remember him.

My sincere condolences to Ian's family. Ian was the first person I ever met in the RN mental health service and I served under him for most of my career. I have no doubt that without his support and kindness I would not be doing the job I have today. I also have no doubt that I am not alone, he touched very many lives; both colleagues and patients. To Anna and Maisie, the sudden loss of Ian was a real blow, to his two most special people and to all who loved him. It has been hard for it to sink in. On my being able to imaging how hard this time is for you - I wished to thank you for accepting this “book” of remembrance that has allowed me, and others I am sure, to come to terms with the loss of Ian and to reinforce to you it’s what I know you already know - that Ian was a good and loving husband, a very proud Dad, proficient Naval Officer, the most caring, professional and humble Nurse and one of the best human beings we could wish to have known. Ian was one of the kindest colleagues I have worked with, always calm, approachable and an amazing sense of humour. Really helped to bring a positive and supportive culture to all the teams he was a part of. A role model to many and always had the importance of family at his core, I have fond memories of my time in navy command with him.

We first met on Op TELIC and I remember your smile and positive nature, and where the nice biscuits could be found. You said they were for the patients, but I remember eating a few with you. Over the years our paths have crossed several times and it was always a delight to catch up with you. We will all miss your wise council and friendship, but you will never be forgotten x

Ian was a kind, approachable and inspiring human being, he is thought of with affection and sadness at his parting. I empathise with his family in their loss having lost my own father at a similar age. I am grateful to have known him and will always remember him fondly.
