Fr. Joachim Cabanyes
xx xx, xxxx - xx xx, xxxx
Fr. Joachim (Okechukwu) Cabanyes Trevino was born in Madrid on the 29th of November 1957. A chemist by profession, he was ordained as a priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei, a task to which he dedicated his entire energies. He was very calm, good humored and easy to get along with, personality traits that he diligently applied to his pastoral work with many people. Hundreds of priests, lay people of all walks of life had him as spiritual director, as advisor for their souls. He came to Nigeria in 1988 and fully immersed himself in the culture. He has been Chaplain to a number of centres of Opus Dei including Greendale, Uhere, Hillpoint, Uzomiri, Ezindo and Ugwuoma. Fr. Joachim was very generous and always available to help. No task was too menial for him. He died on the 16th of July, 2020 after a brief illness and will be sorely missed by us all and of course by his mother Pilar and his siblings Luis, Maria, Diego and Isabel.

As I think of Fr Joachim, I simply think "how beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news". I called him Don Juachim - the Spanish version of his name. He was our priest at Greendale - always cheerful, with a unique smile, and always always patient, and firm. I felt really sad on hearing of his passing, and I am consoled with knowing for sure that he is in heaven. Rest in perfect peace Fr, and pray for us. Amen.

Dear Fr. Joachim, if it a possibility to ask for who you want from the other side, I will ask for you a million times. Still remember the last days you were with us, how you kept encouraging me to put myself together during my Daddy's admission in the same hospital. How you arranged reception of communion for him while still in the hospital. Just as my Dad was discharged, I heard you were admitted. I kept up hope to see you again and tell you how it all went, Little did I know that that will never happen. We will forever miss you in my family, because you rekindled our hope during those fearful days. Adieu father. God love you most

Fr. Joachim was a kind, generous and selfless soul, the perfect big brother and the perfect father rolled up in one. What a gift!! And I say this having not seen or been in contact with him for over a decade...still, I cannot forget. Words cannot really express the Depths of one's feelings at a time like this, but thank you Fr. Joachim for making the moments we had with you worthwhile, Thank God for the gift of your life and time spent with us. I know that for you life has only changed (not ended) and for the best. Like the great brother that you are, you have gone ahead of us like a champion to the other side. I look forward to seeing you usher me to the other side when my day comes, indeed, I am consoled by the thought that you are already in the place where I too will go one day. So even now, your life is still a source of strength and consolation. Pray for us as you dwell in the Light and cheers to a life well lived.

I really couldn't believe it. . I last saw him on Zoom meeting giving us doctrinal class. The ever present smile on his face, his soft sounding voice and loving and gentle nature will always be in my heart. Those words of love, always reminding me of how Jesus loves me so much and how much I should love and forgive others. He makes it sound so simple and easy as if I have not started trying. . I know that I will never forget you. You will ever remain alive in my heart, with your words of love and teachings enlightening the way for me. Thank you Jesus for making it possible for me to meet and know Fr Joachim. He is indeed an apostle of yours. May he enjoy your everlasting happiness. Amen.

Dear Fr. Joachim, your passing has been a rude shock to us. It has taken me almost two weeks to pen down our condolences because of tears. As we continue to pray for you, keep on interceding for us here. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

It was a shock to learn of the passing on of Fr Joachim. He was a holy priest and God called him to Himself on the feast of our Lady of Mount Carmel. May he rest in peace.

Fr Joachim Okechukwu Cabanyes, yours is an embodiment of what St. Josemaria said " learn to be tough on yourself: it is a science that builds character and saints". We saw you live this in a refined way. A Prince in his land left his comfort zone to share with us our under developed world, even encouraging us to leave our petty comfort zone. You who transversed land and seas to bury our relatives and friends was buried quietly Thank God in our lwollo. When l personally concluded that Fr. Okechukwu has truly naturalized was once that l sighted him at a burial singing away the prayers of the final absolution and "ln Paradium" in vernacular. You were one of us always and never wanted to be different. Thank you Fr. Joachim! Your Meditations, gentle teasings and words still echo in my heart. You looked so immortal one could forget you are man. But you are also an Angel and Heaven has gained one. You were everything to us a father, a spiritual guude and a brother. I believe you have paid the price of Corona Virus Pandemic for us all in this land. So this is the beginning of the end of the Pandemic. Thank you so much for everything Fr Joachim! We didn't have the time to say it and as we don't say goodbyes, see you in Heaven! Cos am sure you will not forget us as you never did here on earth. So Long Fr!
