Emily Webster

I knew Emily for 3 years as her neighbor in Stroud Gloucestershire, she was studying for her A levels. I cannot believe that such a lovely person has gone. I had no idea she had achieved so much since those early days. Emily and I had wonderful debates about life and conservation, she always had the best arguments and pointed me in the right direction. I remember how fond she was of her Dog Kelsie….. I am totally lost for words

Emily,the world is a much poorer place after this sad news,when I first met you all those years ago I'd never met anyone so beautiful,funny,warm,kindhearted and intelligent! You were a bright light in my life,you got me through some dark times and I wouldn't be the person I am today without your influence on me. Rest in peace Em x

Emily, you've been taken away from us too soon. Words cannot express what a joy it was to know you, and the contribution you made to your Faculty, College, the University and everyone you touched. You made the University a better place and you will be dearly missed.

Emily, from the moment I walked into your office that very first time to chat about my dissertation ideas, to the very last time we spoke when you congratulated me on my new job, you showed me nothing but kindness, compassion, warmth. You had the most incredible ability to push me academically while also being the most encouraging, supportive and empathetic soul. You inspired me to be better, to strive for more, and I promise to continue to do so in your memory, for you, for all people, and for our planet. I feel blessed to have known you and to have witnessed the incredible work you were doing to make the world a more sustainable, prosperous and equitable place. Thank you for all you contributed to this world. I know that you impacted each and every person who was lucky enough to cross paths with you in the most positive way. We all learnt so much from you - how to be not only a better academic, but also a better human, and to use what we are blessed with to make the world a better place. Emily was a rare combination of things: bubbly, warm, fun and simultaneously brilliant, with a razor sharp, logical mind. Despite her many academic accomplishments, she remained utterly unpretentious and kind. She stayed optimistic while bravely confronting some of the more difficult outcomes of humanity's actions. She was a mentor, a wonderful friend and one of the best teachers I've ever known. Emily: Less than two weeks ago, you were bubbling with enthusiasm as we laughed in a cafe on Mill Road. In that cafe, I distinctly remember thinking how much I admired you - silently thinking how lucky I was to know someone deeply intelligent, giggly and so very empathetic all at once. You were outlining a thoughtful case for climate change litigation, and in the next breath you seamlessly changed topics to decorating your flat and sharing how excited you were to buy plants from Cambridge Bee! You championed indigenous wisdom, human rights and the protection of our precious, delicate planet; and yet, despite working on such heavy, crucially important topics, you radiated joy, warmth and hope. Your legacy will live on in all the people you've inspired. You told me over a year ago now, that we cannot contribute to the battle against environmental degradation if we don't care for ourselves first and focus on the little things our environment that make life beautiful. I, and many others, promise to commit to the fight against climate change and to the protection of nature, in your memory. As I do so, I promise to cherish the bumble bees and the daisies along the way. You were unique, dear Emily. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being you.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. Dr. Webster was so kind to me during my time at Cambridge. She very kindly helped me with an extracurricular project I was working on and which was overwhelming for me. I was so grateful for her help - it made a huge difference. The fact that she went out of her way to help someone she barely knew says a lot about who she was. I'm sending my condolences to all her family and friends.
