Dr Vitalicy Chifwepa

Dr Vitalicy Chifwepa, an Educationist with a background of information science and distance education.Dr Chifwepa started his career as a librarian in the Planning Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Development, as it was called then. That was after his Bachelor of Studies with Library Studies degree at the University of Zambia (UNZA). He proceeded to study for his Master of Library and Information Science at University of Western Ontario,Canada, after which he became a lecturer at the University of Zambia. He lectured in Library and Information Science at UNZA from 1991 rising to the Rank of Senior Lecturer. He headed the Department of Library and Information Studies at UNZA. For his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree he studied the application of information and communication technologies in support of distance learning. He became the Director of Distance Education at UNZA before becoming the University Librarian at the same university from 2008 to 2015. Since 2016 he as been the Director of Quality Assurance at the Higher Education Authority in Zambia, the position he held till his death.

The news of the passing of my friend Vitalicy has hit me with great shock. We spent time together as PhD students in Brussels and even shared a hostel. Whenever he visited Nairobi, he will always contact me and we would venture out for Nyama Choma. I have lost a friend who was a pioneer in ICT for Library Science in Africa. May God comfort the family.

The HOD who was never bossy, but treated us all as colleagues. A champion of the LIS profession in Zambia. As Director, Quality Assurance he was an advocate quality libraries in higher education institutions. Sad that he never lived to see the new look KMU Library among others he helped transform.

I'm saddened to learn of the demise of Dr. Vitality Chifwepa. This colleague and mentor sat in my interviews at COMESA as the specialist among the panelists and I was told later that he heaped praises on me, he gave me a new lease of life from those interviews.
