Charles “Chuck” Spanger walked the world with a spring in his step, a song on his lips, and a strength of purpose few come to know. His purpose was to make the world better, and whether fighting for climate justice, coaxing forth his beautiful garden, or whipping a crowd into a raucous song or ball game, Chuck lived his purpose with joy and gusto.

This is so sad. Sending love and condolences to Chuck's family. I worked with Chuck in 350 Maine for a couple of years - 2018 to 2020. His energy, positive enthusiasm, and passion for the environmental cause was extraordinary. This is a great loss for our activism community.

I met Chuck in 1970, when I moved to Lynn as part of the "Red Fist Collective". Many of the people we worked with were young, but Chuck was already a thoughtful and mature activist. It was a delight working with him to organize a Food Coop, fight for rent control, and organize against the war in Vietnam. We have stayed in touch, and I have admired his spirit of activism most recently in his work with Third Act. He was indeed a wonderful human being, and I Loved his smile and easy (sometimes sardonic) laugh. Chuck, Thank You for being you, always.
