Beata Schanda, former President of the European Music Council (EMC) and former Executive Vice President of the International Music Council (IMC), passed away on Tuesday, 31 May 2022. Beata’s leadership has significantly shaped both the EMC and the IMC and paved the way for what the associations are today. Throughout her presidency, the EMC was founded as an independent legal entity in 2003 and in 2005, Beata organised the EMC annual conference ‘Many Musics in Europe’ in Budapest and curated the wonderful concert ‘Many Musics in Hungary', which many of the IMC-EMC members will have in good memory. Beata also served as member of the Executive Board of the International Music Council, including as Executive Vice President. Over the years, Beata made a vital and multifaceted contribution to the work of the IMC. Many of you will have met her at the IMC World Forum on Music in Paris in October 2019. Beata will be deeply missed, as a wonderful colleague, a mentor, and a dear friend.

I remember Beata's wise counsel on my first General Assembly as Hon. Treasurer of the IMC, starting a period of unintentional mentorship that came about by listening to her opinions on the state of our (IMC) finances. She was part of the resource shapers, because her audit extended beyond money, something I very well remembered during my term as president. To the family, colleagues and friends, I pray comfort. I was.on the board of the European Music Council with Beata for many years and had already met her before at events of the International Music Council..After this time I was always happy to meet Beata at different occasions, I enjoyed my conversations with her. She was energetic, full of ideas and plans, and always smiling as.on this picture. I will miss her and her positive and optimisitic attitude.

Was für eine traurige Nachricht! 1992 bin ich Beata das erstemal begegnet bei der general assembly der Jeunesses Musicales International und seitdem immer wieder in verschiedenen Gremien, in denen ich mit ihr zusammen arbeiten durfte. In welcher Sprache konnte sich Beata nicht verständigen, akzentfrei natürlich? Das habe ich immer bewundert, ebenso ihre Ausgeglichenheit und Ihren scharfen Verstand. Bei ihr ging es immer um die Sache, als Person nahm sie sich immer zurück. Und doch habe ich sie vor allem in Erinnerung als warmherzige, mitfühlende Frau, mit Humor und liebevoller Hinwendung allen gegenüber, denen sie begegnete. I am so sad to learn of the passing of Beata, a former colleague and like me, a past President of the EMC, a position I know we were both honoured to hold. Beata was always warm and welcoming and her smile was radiant-it could fill a room. I offer my sincere condolences to her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by both the EMC and IMC families.

What a sad message... I had the huge privilege to serve on the EMC Board for a few years with Beata as the EMC President. I will remember her as someone totally committed to the cause of music and international cooperation. She had a sharp mind, always asking the right questions and looking for possible solutions.
