Barry McCormick

It was lovely working and knowing Barry as his PA from 2002 to 2011 and we kept in touch on a regular basis. I and a number of DH colleagues have many fond memories of Barry while at DH. I spoke with him just before Christmas 2021 and will miss our conversations. My condolences to Hugh, Gavin and their families

I am very sorry to hear about Barry's death. We were colleagues at Southampton and we had many great discussions about the various pieces of research we were doing. He was a very considerate and helpful colleague. An example of his creative thinking was his idea of setting up the Economic Review to communicate what economics could say about current events in a way A level students could understand was truly innovative. I was happy to be involved in the early years. It is still going strong and has been taken up by other disciplines. When he was at the Department of Health I was pleased to do some work for him relating to the ban on smoking in public places, and his work on that has had a huge benefit for public health. He and Doreen were great friends, and we always enjoyed our meeting with them. He is sorely missed.

Very sorry to hear about Barry - he was a colleague at Oxford and he was a kind, thoughtful and respected colleague. His academic rigour was rightly appreciated and the ongoing work of the group he brought to Oxford is a fitting legacy - RIP Barry.

My sincerest condolences to Gavin and Hugh and their families. I first met Barry in 1980 and will share some of my memories on the Memories section of this site.

I was a colleague and friend of Barry during his time at Southampton, and acted as his Deputy when he was Head of Department. He was enthusiastic and always full of ideas. He was the driving force behind the Economic Review, a magazine for A-level Economics students, which is about to enter its 40th year of publication. I was both shocked and saddened to hear of his passing.

Barry and I were best mates at school in Arnold Nottinghamshire and afterwards he was best man at my first wedding .Glad I spoke to him a couple of months ago Sorry I shall be in Italy on his funeral date. Condolences to Gavin and Hugh

As a colleague of Barry's throughout his time at Southampton, he was a major contributor to what was probably the golden age of Economics at the University, both cademically and institutionally. Always full of ideas combined with a very supportive attitude
