Anne Valette

xx xx, xxxx - xx xx, xxxx

Our beloved colleague and friend Anne joined Greenpeace France back in 2006, as a volunteer coordinator. She shifted to working as an energy campaigner, then as a team leader for the sustainable agriculture campaign. Most of us in the global Greenpeace network will know and remember her for the incredible energy and leadership she showed while developing and launching the global Meat and Dairy campaign. It was in the most demanding positions that Anne's professional and personal gifts were so valuable: a relentless energy, a deep commitment to the cause, the care she had as a team leader in fighting for her colleagues and her project... For the best of the last 15 years, Anne was an inspiration to many of us, as a campaigner, as a team leader, as a friend. Anne passed away in a tragic accident on the 20th of October 2020. She will be remembered as a passionate environmentalist and a caring colleague, but foremost as the loving mother of 10-year-old twins Lou and Matheo. All our thoughts and love now go to them, to Anne's family, and to those closest to her. We will miss you, Anne.

Condolences

It has taken me weeks to summon the courage to share this, and even now it is hard to express just how incredible a person Anne was. I worked very closely with her for 4 years. She was whip smart, incredibly organized, strategic, completely no-bullshit, and always willing to give more to what she believed in. She was also loving and kind, thoughtful, funny, and so incredibly fun to be with. She was a colleague, but also a dear friend: someone I trusted implicitly and confided in, someone who made me feel valued, respected, and heard. She was and will remain forever one of my heroes, someone who inspires me always to be my best self, reminds me to let go of the things I cannot control, and places the well-being of those around her (her family, her friends, her colleagues) above all else. There is an Anne-shaped hole in my heart now, and I feel so deeply sad for her kids and for all that the world has lost.

I met Anne in my first few weeks of working for Greenpeace UK, attending a European meeting in Brussels in November 2007. She touched me immediately, as she does with everyone who met her. Her vitality, her beauty, her modest confidence and her unbelievably kind yet no-nonsense spirit. We charted similar journeys through Greenpeace from our different offices, as young campaigners working on car regulations, energy and oil, to the Arctic campaign and then to campaigning on food and Meat & Dairy. Anne will always be a role model for me and my heart will always feel the pain that she was taken before her time. She shines on wherever there is the fight for justice and compassion. Dear Anne, we will miss you xx

It took me a few days to write these words. I was subconsciusly postponing this painful moment as much as I could. But here I am remembering Anne with tears in my eyes. I closely worked with Anne for many years, first when she was leading the EU Food/ag project, then throughout the Meat campaign. I also had the privilege to spend a year leadership training with her where we got to know each other also on a personal level. I consider Anne a friend, not only a colleague, since we regurlarly talked about our feelings, aspirations and dreams. From a professional point of view, Anne was an outstanding leader. She led with emphathy, like not many are able to do, and she was always result oriented. She cared deeply for her projects and her team. A true leader indeed. From a personal point of view, Anne was a caring mother, always thinking about her children. She had a great sense of humour and, as an Italian, we always teased each other out on which culture has the best food, the most beatiful language and the most fashionble style. Our meetings always had a serious/"business" part, a personal part, and a laughing hard part. I just would like to conclude with a personal message for Anne's parents, brother and children. Although we do not know each other, I hope we will be able to meet one day so we can tell you personally our stories about Anne. Stories you probably do not know as they belong to her professional life, but that will make you even more proud of her. I will carry these memories in my hearth while I will be able to share them with you one day. My deepest condolences. Alessandro Saccoccio (Greenpeace International)
