Ajit Thakurdas

xx xx, xxxx - xx xx, xxxx

He made people laugh, he comforted them, he pranked them, he gave them his broad shoulders to lean on. He stood out - not just because of his towering personality, but also because of his large-heart in which thousands lived. He was a beloved husband, father, nana, mamu, jija-ji - filling these roles with his love, his friendly boxing punches, his chuckles, his mimicry, his mentoring and sharing his vast knowledge on so many things: from cricket to world history to western movies.

Mr. Ajit Thakurdas A Conversationalist, a Boxer and a Humorist I was up on a guava tree in the Bible House, when Ajit Thakurdas came cycling in. He saw me and stopped. I knew that he was interested in my sister. So I assumed that he would have little or no interest in me. I was just a young boy. I was surprised at how wrong I was. He took plenty of time to talk, as though I was important too. It was just my first glimpse of him as a great conversationalist. I grew and over the years took many friends to visit him. He was never at loss at words, no matter who he was talking to or on what topic. It must have been on my second or third meeting with him that I learnt not to shake his hands. He never talked about his boxing, but his handshake was always enough to covey the message that he was not someone to wrestle with. That may have been a reason why the Lord gave him daughters, not sons. They could “box” with his verbal skills. Back then, the annual spiritual life convention at the Allahabad Bible Seminary used to be Christian Community’s main spiritual festival. As young boys we visited all the mainline churches but found them equally dead dry. The Convention was always lively because they invited great speakers and singers. The messages impacted us seriously. Yet, Ajit Bhaiya always picked up something funny to mimic. He never made fun of the message itself . . . but made us laugh by making fun of the messengers’ mannerism, which we had missed. I miss him. Vishal Mangalwadi

Ajit had an amazing sense of humour. There was a time when we were both attached to the Holland Hall college of Allahabad University, he was a couple of years senior to me, but we got along well and saw many western movies in the Palace cinema in the good old days of early 60s. He was an encyclopaedia of Cricket records. He did not play cricket, but he remembered the score of every county match played in English summer. His mimicry of cricket commentary was a master class. He also had a good knowledge of the Bible and often spoke at the Trinity church. One of his sermons had a profound effect on us and we understood why people born in a Christian family also needed to repent of their sins. This had a huge impact on our spiritual lives. Goodbye my friend, may God receive you in his kingdom.

Ajit uncle was one of his kind. His stature, both physical and interior spoke about who he was. Physically intimidating to a 5.8 me, he always stooped to accommodate even when I was a kid. His ability to make one comfortable was outstanding. Humor was his distinctive. Things softly said but loaded with such subtle humor, and loads of it was Ajit uncle. Rachna you have been stamped so well by him. Such fond memories of him. I can still him with the whole family seated in the side wing of the Muirabad church. Ajit uncle, you will never be forgotten.

Words of your near and dear ones conjure up an image of a grand man , beautiful in mind, beautiful in body and beautiful in soul. Never had the privilege of meeting him but has been brought alive in the tearful but proud memories shared by the more privileged. It's true that to live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends. I'm sure God will grant you all strength to somehow soldier on. Grieve as you will but rejoice in a life well lived,a privilege not extended to everyone by Him. RIP. With lots of love and reverence from a fellow Allahabadi(unknown)
