Dear Subinay, The moment I heard about your passing was also the moment I heard of Biden becoming the US President elect. Could you imagine how confused and numbed I was? I was speechless and I had a restless night ... Those days I was looking at our communications, on email, on FB, on WhatsApp ... your last email to me was the one you shared your concern about the impact of COVID lockdown on your dense Bangladesh, you asked me to keep this in mind as we are preparing for our CPD. You promised us that you would be back. Soon. I know if we ask people to pick three words that describe you, mine would be 'kindness', 'integrity' and 'humbleness'. I know if you heard me saying this, you would smile, a gentle and kind and humble smile ... The last time you were in Bangladesh, I invited you to stay at my house. You said 'next time' as that time you needed to stay close to your relatives. I said 'ok' without knowing, there would be no next time ... And the book you gave me ... I haven't finished it and I don’t think I will finish it. At least for now. I never told you that when I learned that I would come to Bangladesh, I asked myself who I’ve known as Bangladeshi, you came to mind and I knew right there and then, that my time in Bangladesh would be fine ... Please be well up there and know that we are down here celebrating your life. I am proud and grateful to have known you ... and please give us some light and insights as we finish what you have started … our next CPD for Bangladesh will be dedicated to you ... With loving memories ...

I am simply shocked and saddened at the death of a golden son of our soil, Subinay Nandy. A perfect gentleman, as he was with impeccable personalities, we lost in him a person with great human quality, intelligence, and fortitude. He visited me once in my Planning Commission office and I was charmed by his depth of knowledge and humbleness. He promised me that next time he visits Bangladesh in connection of the preparation of CPD, he will talk to me again. This reminds of the famous saying that “Man proposes, God disposes”. May his soul rest in peace. And our thoughts and prayers are with his family members. You will be sadly missed.

When I joined UNDP Bangladesh, I heard a lot about one senior Bangladeshi UNDP colleague, who kept his ties with Bangladesh and UNDP Country office through various personnel namely (one and only) Hashem Bhai. I was briefly acquainted with him as some of his personal effects came in Bangladesh, where I intervened to clear them from DHL. I came to know, he was elder brother of one of eminent singer of Bangladesh, named Subinay. But never met him in Bangladesh. However, between 2014 or 2015, I met him outside Bangladesh during my detail Assignment in Sri Lanka, where he was posted as Resident Coordinator. Indeed, I told myself, he was to me look like a complete Man. Amazing personality, determined, bold and through and through outspoken to make the impression with right words at the right time. He was happy with my mission report and heard that he spoke of me during than Country Director Pauline’s visit to UN HQ New York. It was a really proud moment for me to be able to create impression on him. Lastly, I was assigned the responsibility to hire him for UNDP Bangladesh on 2019-2020. I was able to process the paperwork almost in a heartbeat, simply because, I did not want to miss the chance to show my appreciation as he spoke highly of me during my mission in Colombo. This, I was able to do when I met him in Bangladesh Country Office as part of consultancy assignment. And he remembered me! Which was a real surprise for me. I cannot imagine he left us so soon without giving us a chance to say goodbye. Subinay was like reflection of UN norms and culture through his pocketbook (UN charter) which he dearly kept with him and played a UN Role Model throughout his life. He will be missed by his colleagues, friends and family. I wish him to be in a better place, wherever he is, and be in Peace and look upon us from up there and follow his guidance and wisdom. Thank you Subinay! And Farewell……..
