Professor Victoria Chick

I was sad to learn that Professor Chick passed away early this year. She was a wonderful tutor and made a lasting impression upon me during my undergrad years (1996-9). Professor Chick possessed an infectious enthusiasm for economics which sustained my own. Most memorable was the kindness and warmth she showed me at times when I would seek her counsel. I regret not keeping in touch with Victoria, but take great solace in reading of her achievements and illustrious life in the intervening years. May her soul rest in peace.

I was very sad to hear the news about Vicky. Vicky was interested in mathematics and mathematicians and, of course, I respected her greatly as an authority on Keynes. Our topics of conversation ranged from eccentric mathematical geniuses I knew in Cambridge to the great West Indian cricketer, Sir Garfield Sobers. She was also, for many years, very supportive of my hands-on approach to admissions in the Department. I saw her only once after the pandemic. She looked frail but she told me that she was relishing seeing her colleagues back in the Department. That is the lasting memory I will have of her.

Very sad news to hear of Vicky's death. Although we did discuss economics, I remember her mainly as a supportive and encouraging colleague and friend. From my earliest days in the Department she was welcoming and friendly and I much valued her opinions on a wide range of issues. She had widespread cultural interests and we often discussed exhibitions we had both been to. We will all miss her characteristic laugh echoing through the departmental corridors.

I was very sad to read about Professor Chick’s passing. As an undergraduate economics student, I found her lectures to be very different to what we were taught in other classes. There was little algebra or calculus, just an intuitive explanation of ideas and observations. As I moved into working as as an analyst in the public and private sector, the profoundness of the ideas she taught and frameworks she outlined became more and more pertinent. She influenced and inspired more people that she will ever know.

This is such sad news. Vicky was a spirited and principled colleague, and a rigorous and creative thinker. She had an infectious enthusiasm for ideas and was a deeply respected and influential researcher on post-Keynesian monetary economics. She was a cheerful presence in the department, and we will all miss her humour and her generosity.

My deepest condolences to Vicky's family and friends. I met Vicky in 2010 when I joined the department. Although economics is not my expertise and IT wasn't hers, we had so many discussions over the years as she was an extraordinary person with so many interests. She will be missed greatly...

I am saddened to hear of Professor Chick's death. She was a regular visitor to the Economics department at City, thanks to her friendship, one would say mentorship, of my colleague Andy Denis. With her passing, Economics loses one of its last remaining links to its own origins as a societal discipline.

I spent my first few years at UCL working in the office next to VIctoria's, and we became personal friends as well as having considerable academic interchange, particularly since I had the privilege of taking over the teaching of her famous module "Money and Banking", which I taught for 15 years. I had the privilege of delivering the welcoming address to the hundred-or-more participants in her 80th birthday event at UCL, where I made comments designed to reflect her views on the direction taken by the Department -- comments which were, of course, received with that familiar and very audible laugh which we shall all be missing in the years to come.
