Thomas Mehen

Tom was a brilliant and uniquely kind individual. I had the privilege of getting to know him while working directly with him on the TMD Handbook through the TMD Topical Collaboration. He was a deeply creative physicist. Our research interactions were both enjoyable and productive, especially as they related to the handbook and our work within the collaboration. I also got to know Tom beyond the realm of physics due to some shared personal experiences, which developed into a friendship that was—and continues to be—valuable to me. We communicated frequently, making his passing all the more difficult to bear. He will be sorely missed. I offer my deepest condolences to Tom’s family and close friends.

I was shocked when I first saw the obituary of Tom. Tom was on one of my PhD thesis committees and we had a paper about the heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory a long time ago in Duke. Tom is not only a great physicist but also a nice person easy to get along with. We really had a good time during our collaboration and I have learned a lot from him. Our community and colleagues will always miss him.

I would like to offer my condolences to Tom's family. I worked with him when he was a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech. He was a dedicated scientist and at the same time fun to work with because of his lively sense of humor. He will be missed by the high energy theory community as well as his family.

My deepest condolences to Tom’s family. I’ve known Tom for many years, from the time he was a graduate student at Johns Hopkins, and although we never collaborated I had the pleasure of talking physics and sharing a pint with him many times. He was a great physicist and a great colleague - a deep thinker with a ready laugh. His passing is a great loss to the Physics community.

I was deeply saddened by Tom's passing. He was a great bloke to have a drink and chat with and an excellent scientist. My condolences to all his loved ones and all those touched by his kindness and friendship.

I am very sad to hear this news. Having known Tom for over a decade I am simply short of words. This is way too soon. I have always looked forward to meeting Tom at the annual SCET conferences and it brought me great joy. He was an amicable person and an amazing physicist. May you rest in peace, Tom.

Tom was a brilliant physicist as I got to know him when he was coordinating the writing of the TMD handbook. I will miss him mostly for his kindness and open mindedness towards making the physics world a more equitable place for all.

It is far far too early to be saying goodbye to you, Tom. I remember how much you enjoyed visiting Santa Fe and the surrounding area and how much we enjoyed you visiting, enjoying the local scenes and the local beer. I will always appreciate your willingness to come in person to the TMD School in 2022 to lecture and interact with the students even during the pandemic. You combined a love for physics, a love for life, and love for everyone around you. You leave the world with a deeper understanding of its own inner workings and a deeper sense of how to appreciate and enjoy it with fellow human beings. Deep condolences to all you loved and who loved you. You had a special friendship with Andrew Hornig also, together you did remarkable work and radiated happiness, friendship and joy. I hope you have found him and quality brews beyond what we can find in this world. Rest in lasting peace, friend.
