Svante Wold

It is with a great shock and unbelievable sadness that I learned today of Svante’s passing. Dearest Nouna, please accept mine and Tanya’s most sincere condolences. We all lost not only one of the brightest minds that helped advance the sciences of statistics and chemistry, but a dear friend, a teacher a mentor, a colleague. Thank you Svante for all that you did, for being a part of our lives. Boris and Tanya Polsky

I only knew Svante Wold briefly, but know more about his heritage in chemometrics. My deepest respect and condoleances.

Nouna, I don’t even know how to begin. My heart goes out to you for your loss. I owe both of you more than I can eve repay for getting me started with multivariate statistics, projection methods and of course your Umetrics software. You and Svante were mentors, helpers and friends. I will always cherish the visits, dinners and nights at the pub. Svante’s 60th birthday party is something I was honored to attend. Your kindness and Svante’s wit will always be part of me.

His scientific work and ideas have had great influence on our research philosophy, and chemometric principles are an integral part of our phenotypic drug discovery process. This has led us to important discoveries in the field of CNS pharmacology, and more will come, as the full impact of involving powerful multivariate methods in drug discovery and development evolves. In addition to reading and citing his scientific writings, some of us had the pleasure of meeting Svante, mostly at chemometric conferences, which always meant having a very good time with vivid discussions on science and statistics and many, many laughs. Among the different latent messages in the “PLS” acronym, I would like to advocate this - Please listen to Svante. And we will continue to do so. My condolences to Nouna (and her family). I got to know Svante and Nouna at AstraZeneca (used to be Astra Hässle) in the nineties during several course events. Svante was both pedagogic, humoristic and a very warm person. I also got the chance to work with him in the early times of "OSC", which was an amazing and inspiring experience. I will always have a worm memory from him!

The passing of a giant in this field. i cited his work and admired him from afar in USA. Chemometrics is so important, especially as we generate more multidimensional data and ask tougher questions!

I knew Svante as a visiting professor Bruce Kowalski's research group at UW in the mid 1970's, of which I was a member. We were just inventing what Svante christened Chemometrics. There was great synergy between our methods and Svante's. I remember it as an exuberant and exhausting year as we developed code, tested models, and brainstormed (often at the College Inn Pub). Svante's insights were invaluable and his sense of humor was infectious. Our software and sanity were both vastly improved by Svante.
