Sergej Murray

It was a shock to learn Sergej was in his last days a few weeks ago and immense sadness at his passing. Like many from Singapore, we’ve known each other for many years, for me we both joined UWC at the same time in April ’79. With the wider social group our friendship grew and we created lots of great memories; with music and parties in many of them. From 84 to 90 our friendship continued away from Singapore mainly in Brighton. From the 90s life in general took over and we didn’t see each other as often which I regret. We kept in contact though and I am going to miss our texting around xmas, birthdays and football tournaments. The world has lost someone amazing way too early, but I am left with lots of great memories. He was a great best friend, and will never be forgotten. Condolences to the family and all his friends. Sergej is my brother. All my life, I knew I had a brother overseas and yearned to meet him. Was so grateful that his mom hired a company to find the family!! Fortunate to have had a couple of conversations in handwritten letters between us, however never got to meet face-to-face. During my undergrad studies, I used a university phone and made many many calls in effort to find my brother. I always thought his name was Peter Schneider in the Koln Germany. I called every Peter Schneider in that phone book!!! “ Bist du mein Bruder?” I also took German as my foreign language electivel in high school-having high hopes to meet my brother. So Grateful that his mom Renate found the family. I learned I have a nephew and had great opportunity to speak with my brother a few times as well as sending letters the old fashioned way. Although we never met I feel a great loss. Growing up an only child was lonely and knowing i had a brother whom shared a connection always gave me hope. So grateful to for opportunity to build relationships with my nephew and others. It’s nice to read others memories it shines light about a remarkable person he was. He will always be in my heart.

I think we all though we'd have more time for goodbyes and last laughs. The positivity and wonderful memories from all who new Sergej across the years since his untimely passing have been wonderful to read. A true celebration of a life well lived.

I was shocked and saddenend to hear the news of Sergej passing. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sergej was always great fun to be around, a wonderful storyteller and someone who always made you feel welcome. I have lots of fond memories from the 80s and 90s and although we lost touch over the years, I've always thought of Sergej as a very special friend from my Brighton days. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

The news about Sergej really hit me. We were UWC students in Singapore, lucky expat kids in our teens with all the freedom and joy that time gave us. Those years meant a lot and Sergej was always right at the centre of them - warm, easy and welcoming to everyone. Life took us in different directions and time moved on but we did cross paths over the years and whenever we met it felt as if nothing had changed at all. I’m really grateful to have known him and I’ll always remember him with great fondness. My thoughts are with Sergej’s family and all who loved him at this sad time. Rest easy pal.

RIP my friend and condolences to family and friends. So sad to hear of his passing, triggering so many great stories and memories of what a legend he is - memories flooding back of his time in Singapore and Brighton, the places we lived (was Denmark Terrace real?) and adventures he was always central to: Italia 90 in the work’s van, 6 of us to south of France in the estate, the ferry to Hoek v H and Koln and so many more. Starting his DJ career in Singapore with Tim and me and then Brighton. His unbound DIY skills. You will be sadly missed.

Sincere condolences to all of Sergej's family and close friends. We were so very sorry to hear this sad news. I met Sergej when I was 14 and he was a big part of my life - from hanging out at the aircon pool at UWC, eating satay at the food stalls in Holland Village, to our shared houses in Brighton, and all the crazy parties we had there! I was saddened to hear about Sergej’s passing. While it’s been years since our Singapore days in the 80s, the memories are something I will always cherish. I regret missing him at Christine’s 50th. Please extend my deepest condolences to his family. He will be fondly remembered.
