I first knew Roger when he came into the copy room in the British Library to photocopy an article on silent Japanese films (of course!) and a chance conversation led to his kindly sharing knowledge in cinema and tips for film festivals with me. He inspired my partner and I to attend the Pordenone Silent Film Festival and il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna regularly. It's always a pleasure to run into him in events like these. Once he gave me a copy of an academic work on modern Chinese literature after he had just purchased it and decided he didn't need it. Yes, from now on, I will go to Pordenone, Bologna and the Cinema Museum to honour you, and my partner, who has joined you not long after. May you watch all the lost classics for us.

I knew Roger through Japan Society and really enjoyed the insights he shared on Japanese film. We had a wonderful lunch and chat together (of course about films) when the society organised a visit to the Watts Gallery. Roger will be very much missed.
