Rev. Thomas Sayibu Imoro

Rev. Thomas Sayibu Imoro was born to a Muslim family in 1956. With his parents' consent, he moved to live with a Christian Agriculturist working with a church Agricultural Station in Yendi, Mr Thomas Ahima, in 1969. Rev. Sayibu had the opportunity to hear and learn more about Jesus Christ whiles living with his foster father Ahima. In September 1971, he received Jesus as his Lord and personal saviour at a Scripture Union camp in senior high school. Rev. Sayibu was an alumnus of Ghana Senior High School, Tamale Senior High School, the University of Cape Coast and the University Of Guelph Ontario, Canada. He co-founded the Northern Evangelistic Association (N.E.A) and NewEnergy- an NGO serving in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). He was instrumental in the establishment of the Coalition of NGO’s in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) in Ghana and Africa Network of Civil Society Organizations in Water and Sanitation (ANEW). He played a key role in the initiation of the MOLE Conference which is currently the largest annual convening of stakeholders in the WASH sector. Rev. Thomas Sayibu served on the executive board of many organisations, including, GILLBT, Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Baptist Child Development Program (BCDP), Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID), Literacy and Development through Partnership (LDP), National Health Insurance Scheme-Northern Region, CONIWAS. He served as S.U Northern Regional Chairman, National Executive Council Member and Camps Committee Chairperson. Rev. Sayibu was married to a lovely wife; Deaconess Samata Mahama Imoro and three blessed children; Wunpini, Nasara and Vincent Taali-mbo. In the early hours of Tuesday 16th June 2020, the news was broken by a male nurse with tears in his eyes. He shared these words ‘’ Throughout my working years in this unit, I have seen a lot of people struggle to die, but not him. He passed peacefully’’. He truly stood for the advancement of God’s Kingdom and we take solace in Psalm 116:15 ‘’ Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.’’. He was a true saint of God.

Thomas Sayibu was—no, is—for he lives on—a brother and friend. He welcomed me onto the GILLBT board, was open in seeking views, was firm but not harsh, and always balanced his leadership with humour. Sayibu’s commitment to the welfare of GILLBT cannot be questioned even if we didn’t always agree on modus operandi (though we usually did). He always thought of me, evidenced by many visits with yam and akɔmfɛm from Tamlale. I will miss our many conversations about GILLBT, Ghana, the church and national politics. Travel well to your new location in the arms of our Lord

I had the huge pleasure of meeting and working with Rev. Sayibu this past December on a research trip to Ghana with my colleagues, some of whom have been collaborating with Rev. Sayibu for decades. He was instrumental in helping us to learn more about inclusive education in Ghana. Samata and Rev. Sayibu also welcomed us to their home and we shared a wonderful meal together with his accomplished and giving children. Rev. Sayibu and Samata also found the time to teach us about African fabrics, to ask their tailor to sew some clergy shirts for my husband's birthday, and to send them all the way to Canada's east coast. We also enjoyed sharing anecdotes about Guelph, where I grew up and attended university as did Rev. Sayibu. I can't express how much his--and their--welcome meant to our team and to me, personally. It is painful to grieve here on earth alongside his family and friends, yet Rev. Sayibu has earned his heavenly rest.
