Lynda “Pie” Rutledge Kirby (60) of Lockhart, TX passed away on Wednesday, November 30 after an arduous battle with pancreatic cancer. She died surrounded by her family and lifelong best friend. Pie was born in Dallas, TX on April 6, 1962 to David Rutledge and Nancy Olds Rutledge. She worked for many years as a homebirth midwife, passionately serving women throughout Central Texas. She was known for her tenacity and strength of spirit, her infectious sense of humor, and her loving acceptance for everyone she encountered. She is survived by her children, Cole (Anna) Kirby, and Lacy (Brandon) Jarvis as well as her beloved grandchildren, Nathaniel Kirby and Hattie and Joseph Jarvis. She also leaves behind her mother, Nancy Olds Rutledge, and her brother, Daniel (Martha) Rutledge, along with a large extended family and many dear friends. She is preceded in death by her father, David Rutledge, and her brother, John David Rutledge. Services will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 2 pm at Sojourn Heights church in Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers, please consider following Pie’s tradition of donating to a family in need this holiday season.

I don’t know Pie, but my mom knew her well as she helped deliver me and my siblings. My mother named my middle name after Pie and I have always treasured it and am so greatful that such a person could help bring me into the world safely.

We’ve struggled to write this in part out of a simple unwillingness to acknowledge that Pie has left us. While our time with her was short, it was always encouraging. As young parents, she had a way of delivering timely, wise, and uplifting words. She instilled confidence in us to do what we felt was best for our children and to always advocate for those we love. We’re so grateful to have shared what time we did, and we are so grateful for Cole’s friendship over the years. We grieve as those with great hope that Pie is more gloriously alive than ever before. Pie, I love her with all of my heart. We have so many fun times around the fire in front of her house. She has has been so important to my family. She was loving and always an anchor. Pie is the strongest person I have know. She lived life to the fullest, she had many hard times that she always excelled to be the wonderful person she was. Her faith was strong as well as her opinions. I love her so much forever. I have been so blessed to have her in my life.

I was sorry to learn of Pie's passing but glad her pain is over. Heaven is rejoicing over her presence and laughing with her. She loved Lacy and Cole so much and so do Chris and I. She was so happy for you in everything you accomplished.
