Peter Rippon

It is with great sadness that Councillor Peter Rippon passed away on Sunday 20th December. Peter was elected to Council on the 1st May 2003 representing the Shiregreen & Brightside Ward and later went on to represent the Richmond Ward. He was Co-Chair of Planning for the last 5 years and sat on numerous Scrutiny Committees during his years of service. He was also the Labour Group Whip. Peter also served as the 118th Lord Mayor of Sheffield in 2014-2015. Peter was a very kind and thoughtful man who touched so many people’s lives in so many different ways. He worked tirelessly to ensure Sheffield was a great place to live for everyone, and was dedicated to improving the lives of his constituents and the citizens of Sheffield. He was very passionate about his city and worked consistently to raise its profile and the recognition it deserved. Peter will always be highly thought of and missed very much by all his colleagues and friends on Sheffield City Council.

My sincere condolences to Pete's family. I worked with Pete for a number of years at Nottinghamshire County Council. He was so helpful and had a great knowledge of the Benefits system. He could be relied upon to get the best possible result for the people we worked with. I'm very sad to learn he has passed away.

So sad to hear a true son of Sheffield, Pete, has passed away. I first met Pete when we started at Bassetlaw Community Learning Disability Team in April 1984. I worked with Pete for over 19 years, always found Pete to be a true gentleman, willing to help others with the complexities of the benefits system. He was proud to have been elected to Sheffield City Council, and his chest must have been bursting with pride when he was elected as Lord Mayor. Heart felt condolences to all his family.

I was shocked to read about Cllr Rippon's death and felt far sadder than might have expected for someone who I didn't really know. I would only see Cllr Rippon quarterly at one of the scrutiny panels which both he and I had attended for many years. I was always pleased when I saw Cllr Rippon in the room because he was always so fair and reasonable in his approach. He also had a very reliable way of seeing things from a 'human' perspective, would treat everyone with respect and afford them a 'fair hearing'. I rather think I took his attendance at the meetings for granted as he had been the longest-serving member and was one of those folk who you think (and hope) will be around forever. It's very sad news.

It was so sad to visit the church yesterday to say goodbye to Peter. My heart goes out to all of the family. It was lovely to see all the grandchildren and how much they have grown. It is devastating that he is no longer here, but you are all so lucky to know how much he loved you and how much joy you brought him

Extremely heart breaking news, Peter was one of the nicest people I have ever known - a real gentleman. He was always very active, full of energy and carried a smile even when things did not go his way. A very supportive and caring individual who will genuinely be missed.
