Paul Layton

Paul was a gentle, soft spoken Yorkshire man who made a home in Canberra for almost 45 years. He married Susan Kirkness and raised a family with 2 boys, Kirk and Paul. He later re-married to Carmel and continued his life adventures. These were numerous as he had a passion for exploring the winds through sail, powered planes and gliding. He was a keen reader and student of life, learning much about these hobbies as well as his love of growing things in his garden. As a tradesman, his skill with timber and many other building materials was exemplary. He built 2 family homes, the 2nd of which he lived in with Carmel to the end of his life. An exacting craftsman with a creative streak, he did some lovely wood-turning projects in his retirement years. He had a beautiful garden which even included a model train and a miniature stone bridge modelled off one back home in the UK. He was also a keen chess player and even learned classical guitar for a while. A poetry enthusiast and history buff, he enjoyed a good singalong around the pianola too. Which of course, he also used to restore for a few years. He certainly didn't match the stereotypical image of a builder! In his final days, the amazing staff and volunteers at Clare Holland House took such incredible care of him. They are a wonderful organisation and made sure someone was available to sit with him 24hrs a day 7 days a week.
