Dr Nolen was a beloved and esteemed member of the Department of Economics at University of Essex for over a decade. He joined Essex in 2006 and immediately became an invaluable part of every aspect of the Department's life. He was an outstanding and sought-after educator, an extremely driven and high-achieving researcher, and an inspirational and exemplar leader. He played a key role in the development of EssexLab and became its Director recently. To his colleagues, Patrick was a sparkling presence and much like a family member. He was generous, funny, lively, and very much loved. He is greatly missed.

My deepest condolences to Patrick's family, colleagues, and friends. I met Patrick at Trinity and we travelled together with several other students to Ghana one summer. Patrick had an incredible spirit and sense of adventure. He will be deeply missed.

I was so sorry to hear of Patrick's death. His path and mine crossed regularly in a couple of different ways, most recently via EssexLab. I enjoyed working with Patrick and we had agreed we needed to grab a coffee together to chat about common interests, but the pandemic got there first. He was a great guy, enthusiastic and practical about things, with the right priorities. I will miss crossing paths with him.

I am deeply saddened by Patrick's death. I owe a great deal to him, to having been so lucky as to start graduate school a year after him, in the same program and with similar interests. He was so friendly and direct in his advice and guidance. He broke down the immensity and uncertainty of the transitioning from student to researcher in a straight forward way without my even needing to ask him for this navigation. And being years-long office-neighbors with him and our other friends made working into the night almost seamless. I truly cherish my memories of him and send my condolences to everyone who had the amazing privilege of sharing life with him.

I met Patrick when I was a grad student in Cornell. I connected with him again when I moved to the UK. He has always been nice, positive, welcoming, a ray of sunshine. He left us too soon. My deepest condolences to his family and to all that love him.
