Our wonderful colleague, Mike Klym, sadly passed away on 9th August 2026. Mike made a huge contribution in his 38 years as a civil servant, both to the department and wider civil service. Mike was a brilliant and caring colleague whose experience, expertise, quick wit and dry sense of humour will be sorely missed. Mike, I will miss our brain drop conversations and those moments when we'd just think things through out loud together. You had a unique way of cutting through complexity with a straight from the mind observation, usually followed by a dry comment that left even my carefully constructed logic bending. Thank you for your collaboration, honesty and humour. The team will not be the same without you.

I only met and worked with Mike during the last year. However, I found him to be warm, funny, very knowledgeable, helpful and supportive. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and I would like to express my condolences to Mike's wife and sons for their loss.

Mike and I sat near each other in the office most weeks; I will really miss his sense of humour and good company. His depth of knowledge and experience was really clear and he talked warmly about his family and interests outside work. Sending deepest condolences to his loved ones. I will miss you Mike.

Sending my condolences to Mike's family at this awful time. I worked alongside Mike on and off for about 10 years. My memory of him is that he was always smiling, had a great sense of humour and was the epitome of calm (despite his frustration having to explain what JISC does to a new manager / minister every month!). I will remember him as an early riser, always at his desk early in the morning and we'd sometimes chat over toast. I'm sorry Mike never got to enjoy his retirement.
