Lieutenant General Joshua Mahamadu Hamidu

Lieutenant General Joshua Hamidu 15th September 1936 to 2nd February 2021. The late General was born into Dagbon Royalty. His mother was a princess of Gushegu Paramountcy, and his father was Paramount Chief of the Sunson Traditional Area in Northern Ghana. He had a distinguished military career - commissioned into Ghana Armed Forces 18th December 1959 - GH 98 and honourably discharged 12th May 1980. He attended the world-renowned Royal Military Academy - Sandhurst, as well as the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS), the senior college of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom for senior military officers, diplomats, civil servants and state officials. He commanded the Signals Regiment, the Ghana Military Academy, and the Military Intelligence Directorate. He was the Founding Commandant, Ghana Armed Forces Staff College (GAFSC) and eventually rose to become Chief of the Defence Staff, Ghana Armed Forces and Vice Chairman of the ruling Supreme Military Council (SMC II) . He also served as Liaison Officer between Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) and Government Machinery in the turbulent late 1970s. Under President JA Kufuor's government, Gen. Hamidu served as National Security Advisor, High Commissioner to Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chairman of the Narcotics Control Board and Member, Board of Directors - Bank of Ghana. He had previously served as High Commissioner to Zambia - accredited to Malawi, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Botswana; as well as Ambassador to Senegal - accredited to The Gambia and Mauritania. He was World Vision's First African Director, World Vision International Africa Region. Gen. Hamidu was also a Senior Member of the Officers Christian Union, a derivative of the Scripture Union. In the private sector he served as Chairman, African Petroleum Ghana.

Gen. Hamidu and my Dad Air Marshal Azim Daudpota were good friends in 1975 and they did RCDS course together. My Dad to became Commander in Chief of Air Force of Zimbabwe and also Air Marshal in Pakistan Air Force. Chairman / MD of Pakistan International Airlines. Governor of Sindh. Gen. Hamidu and AM Daudpota were in touch earlier. We share your loss and please accept our heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of a Hero of Ghana. My Dad AM Azim Daudpota passed away in 2017 and got a similar State Funeral and buried with Honour. Please let me know how I can contact g=Gen.
