Denis will be greatly missed. It was always a pleasure being in his company. He was unusually good at generating both deeply stimulating and fun intellectual discussions. He really taught me to love research. Working as his research assistant was a great adventure which I will never forget. He introduced me to so many interesting people and ideas, always ensuring the process was pleasurable and exciting. He never took other people's work for granted and was always encouraging and grateful. I am extremely sad that he had to go so soon and that his wonderful wife and daughter had to suffer his loss. He will live on in our hearts and minds forever.

Denis will be dearly missed, both as a scholar and as a charming chap. We became friends when he first arrived in Toulouse. Never ceased to be through a variety of circumstances. To all: here is a true role model. May you now enjoy an "Endless Summer", Denis (I owed you that one...).

Denis' departure has been the saddest news I have ever received. Denis was a real friend, an encouraging mentor, and more he was a person who really cared for people. He was able there to help, humble despite his many accomplishments. He certainly helped me a lot when I needed him and gave me the support that no one else would give. He is an irreplaceable person, and anyone who met him will know how fortunate they have been. I remember discussing research with him in cafe's in Manchester and Toulouse, and he always had an intelligent and encouraging thing to say. And of course, his words were always full of love and admiration whenever he talked about Ania and Victoria. I will miss him very much.

I first met Denis at the University of Illinois in 1985, when we were both post docs. We made fast friends. He was a huge help in my developing a research program that would actually get me a job. His ideas were so fresh and exacting, and it was largely through our many chats that I learned better what a good idea might be. I loved his way of thinking, which took full, creative advantage of his broad and deep fund of knowledge. And what a wonderful, subtle, inimitable, often rakish sense of humor he had (and that grin that came with it). Although we carved our careers on difference continents, we remained good friends. I am so very saddened by his untimely passing, this brilliant, kind man from Manchester.

I first met Denis when I was nearing the end of my PhD because we had a mutual friend. I continued to 'bump into' Denis regularly at academic events since that time. He was always supportive and respectful of me and my research. Denis, my friend and I would often hang out socially at these events. I have many fond memories of Denis' intellect, wit and kindness. I recall the time in a hotel lobby when Denis spent hours telling us about the most amazing woman he had met (and with whom he eventually spent the rest of his life) - we were so pleased for him. I also recall the time when Denis and I decided to showcase our joint interest/expertise in dancing during a Research Poster Presentation as some of our bemused colleagues looked on. However, much to our surprise, it did not go very well, and we couldn't figure out why. We each criticised the other for lacking the necessary skills - but much later, I realised that while I was trying to follow the Ballroom Tango, Denis was trying to lead the Argentine Tango - very different dances indeed! And, another example of why clear communication is important. Denis' research in the topic of communication has over the years played a much larger role in my own research, and I am so grateful to have known the author of those articles that I now cite. I will miss him. I send my deepest sympathies to the family he has left behind.
