Dale Allen

Dale Stanley Allen was born in Melbourne in 1942 to Mervyn Stanley Allen and Flora Elizabeth Anderson. Husband for a while, father for much longer, Dale had a range of varied hobbies, areas of expertise and interests. A classic car enthusiast, hot air balloonist, naturist, 3d photography hobbyist, watch collector, and avid film buff to name but a few. In his later years, he dedicated much of his time to education, being a member and eventually vice president of the Emerald chapter of the U3A including running and curating the regular Cinema Classics sessions. A raconteur of high order, Dale will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him. A bright spark with the wonderful ability to lift the spirits, make you think and bring laughter even in his final days.

I’ve known Dale since the 70s, and he was one of the loveliest people I ever met. Before I moved from Melbourne to Canberra in 1982, I spent two weeks living with Dale, Carmel and the kids in Rowville. I was working in the CBD and Dale would drive me into town every day and pick me up and bring me back to their place. We would have interesting conversations and listen to beautiful music. Dale was eccentric, and one of things I loved about him was that he hated branding and would do anything he could do not display a company’s brand on his clothing or possessions. He was very principled and a trailblazer in so many ways! One of the loveliest memories I have of Dale, is him getting up early and baking bread on the weekend. I thought that was an amazing thing to do, but I’ve learnt just recently that the kids got a bit sick of the bread over the years! In the mid 70s, I would come down to Melbourne from Ballarat and stay with Carmel and Dale, and I was exposed to his love of cars, and hot air balloons. I still have a photo that I treasure of Puff the balloon! Spending time with Dale was always interesting, fun, and valuable. He was a brilliant bloke, a lovely husband, and a fantastic father. He will be missed by every person who got to know him over the course of his life. Condolences from the Greening family. X
