Amrapali passed away suddenly on Friday, 24th of January. She was and will be an inspiration to us all. She loved to travel, nature, and learning new stuff. Her shining eyes, her optimism and laughter filled every place with joy She will be remembered for her bright personality and rigorous organizational skills, as well as for her love of coffee and food. She loved to be amongst nature and travel to new places. Her favorite out-of-office email message was to declare that she was “one with Nature.” This meant she was not online -- and everyone knew she deserved it.

I haven't seen her in years, but was so happy to hear that she would be moving to Amsterdam and always looking forward to meet her at the next occasion. I am shocked and very saddened to learn about Amrapali's sudden and unexpected passing. My heartfelt condolences to her family. I met Amrapali at Stanford when she joined some of our hiking outings. I can honestly say that I've rarely met someone with so much joy, happiness, and enthusiasm for life and everything it has to offer. Every time I saw Amrapali (she worked next door), she couldn't contain her big smile and I was greeted by an enthusiastic "Hi Merle". She would enthusiastically tell me about her research, her travels, the time she spent in my native Germany. She was sad she had to leave California, but couldn't contain her excitement to live in and explore the Netherlands. What a loss!
