Julie Kropacz

March 3, 1959 - August 13, 2020

Our dear friend and colleague Julie Kropacz, Head of Quality, Improvement and Transformation at Herts Urgent Care (HUC), sadly passed away of cancer on 13 August. After being with HUC since its formation, it's impossible to describe how sadly she will be missed and her passing leaves a huge gap. She initially started as a Driver and District Nurse Call Handler and over time progressed through our services to becoming a key leadership figure. Julie wanted to deal with her illness in her own quiet and private way. Our executive team supported her along the way to help her and her family through this sad and dark time. We are all incredibly shocked at her passing - we know she is loved and respected by so many people at HUC, and many of you will be thinking of her and carrying her in your hearts. Julie was also well known to many of our commissioner colleagues and other stakeholders and we know they share our pain at losing her. This online book of remembrance is a way for us to capture our memories of Julie for her family and for the future. From an organisational perspective, she was absolutely instrumental in the set up and launch of all our services, as well as many pilots and service enhancements. Yet she also always had an ear for colleagues and acted as a role model and inspiration for many with a can do attitude. She will never be forgotten. Our hearts and thoughts go out to her husband Mark and daughter Phoebe at this very difficult time.

So sad. What to say about Julie. She would find a way... no matter what. She was resilient. Her work ethic was beyond question. She supported and listened. I loved the 'banter'... her rapport and unique way of not taking things too seriously but remaining committed to the outcome was an incredible ability. She was funny and kind. I feel grateful to her known her, as she gave me insight into the business and demonstrated personal qualities that were inspirational. Frankly we will miss her more than we can really say. All of us. With deep love.

I have had the honour to work alongside Julie for so long, I have so many memories of her. Completing our NHS Pathways train the trainer course together, many 111 go lives, the road trips where even though we had both been before sill getting lost and finding ourselves leaving before others but still arriving after them. We might of at times had some heated conversations were in the end we have both had to agree to disagree, but I know they have made me think twice and probably think again too! Her concern for us all 'But are you ok?' and just knowing when you were not ok but not telling anyone. Julie without you so many people would not be where they are today though the darkest and toughest of times you have been there for us all, and I want to tank you for that and all the help over the years Someone so special cannot be forgotten, rest in peace Julie, heaven gained another angel this week but HUC had that honour first.

I have had Julie by my side for over 10 years. She was always there when I needed her for support and encouragement and our general catch up chats, which lasted for hours! We normally ended up talking about our girls and showing each other videos of them competing in Cheerleading and Gymnastics. We shared many, many happy memories which I will treasure forever. I am so lucky to have had her as my friend for many years. My thoughts are with Mark, Phoebe and Julie's family. RIP my beautiful friend, you will be sorely missed xxx

Julie, where do I start! I’m still struggling to come to terms with the fact that I will not see you hang your coat up and come have a chat when you come in. I’m still getting up from my desk to come ask or run something by you, when will that stop? Do I want it to stop? Julie has been such a huge part of my life at HUC always present and always ready and willing to help in any way. I can not express in words the love and respect Julie has within HUC she truly was an incredible lady. A one off! I’m so lucky to have so many memories, good ones that I will treasure for always. Thank you, Julie. As long as hearts remember As long as hearts still care We do not part with those we love They're with us everywhere

Julie & I bonded over many things but mainly the love of our daughters. Whenever we caught up with each other, we always asked how Phoebe & Astra were and discuss their next new adventures. Julie was a very thoughtful, helpful and wonderful person to know, always greeted me enthusiastically by saying - " I'm so glad its you on duty today Sharyn" which usually meant the shift would be a challenging shift but she always followed up with the offer of a tea of coffee which we both found amusing. Julie knew HUC inside out and any issues identified was the problem solver with a resolution almost immediately. To say I will miss Julie is a massive understatement. My condolences are extended to Mark & Phoebe

Like a lot of colleagues, it is impossible to think of just one memory or event to sum up the positive impact Julie has had on so many people’s lives. Whilst Julie undertook a variety of rules throughout her career at HUC, she really found her niche when we started the journey to delivery NHS 111 back in 2012. Julie stepped forward to take the lead on developing our staff training, procedures and testing all of the various systems and processes that played such an important part in the safe launch of the service. Throughout it all, she was determined that HUC would be the first organisation in the country to pass all elements of the inspection process at the first attempt, something she succeeded with and repeated on numerous occasions. Julie’s commitment to her colleagues and the safety of patients was always evident, whether it was to go the extra mile to ensure colleagues were supported or to use her extensive experience to find a solution to a problem. Whatever the challenge or subsequent solution, Julie was always modest with what she achieved and simply chose to focus her energy on ensuring her colleagues were supported and patient care maintained to the highest possible standards. Julie’s knowledge of all things NHS 111 quickly grew and she became an important member of the HUC team in bidding for new work. She really came into her own at procurement interviews where despite being anxious not to let anyone down, her knowledge, professionalism and enthusiasm shone through and was a pleasure to see her confidence grow as she expertly answered everything she was asked. A truly dedicated, talented, proud and much loved colleague who will be missed by so many who had the privilege to work alongside her. Our thoughts and condolences are with Mark, Phoebe and all of Julie’s family and friends.

I don't know where to start as this still doesn't feel real, I have known Julie for over 10 years, from when we both worked in the contact centre as out of hours call handlers. Julie was the one with the posh newspaper and I had the gossip magazines. Julie then went on to train me on 111 Pathways tapping her pencil on the screen to get me through the call audits. She encouraged me throughout her time at HUC to apply for different opportunities and progress at HUC. Julie was amazing to work with, her witty sense of humour and energy encouraged me to better myself. Someone as special as Julie will never be forgotten, she will remain in our hearts forever x

I will always remember Julie as being beautifully spoken, elegantly dressed, helpful, professional and having a wonderful sense of humour. When HUC was formed in 2008, before the days of 111, I often sat next to Julie in the call centre in the early evenings, taking district nurse calls. She would tell me funny stories of when she used to visit her dad in his nursing home and she would always come to my rescue if I was not sure what I was doing. In more recent times as her job developed and she was busy rushing to different sites, we’d often have a catch up in the kitchen and 9 times out of 10 we would be laughing as we went back to our desks. Mark and Phoebe, I can’t imagine the pain you are feeling at your loss and my heart goes out to you. Julie made a difference to so many people’s lives, and she will be missed beyond measure.

When I first joined Huc I didn't really know who Julie was and then one day was introduced as the lady who knows everything about Huc. Julie was very friendly and when I joined the auditing team said to me ' you will do a great job but remember the HA's work hard and have a lot to deal with so don't be too harsh, although being a HA I know you will understand.' . Julie was always helpful whenever I had a query and when Covid hit, she made sure I understood all the changes that took rapidly place and often we would say to each other 'what will Boris say now', whilst waiting for the daily press conference. Julie was so enthusiastic about Huc and always championing the service and the services that we deliver and fiercely protective of us all. She will be sorely missed and I send prayers and condolences to her family. Rest In Peace Julie. xx

Julie, what can I say - we were just starting to plan how we were going to transform HUC to make it even better!! You were a true example of HUC's values - you put the patient at the start and heart of everything you did. Even though you were an incredibly private person we had some great conversations about trips to Cornwall, our families and most of all hair cuts and covering our 'glittery bits' (aka grey hair!!). My thoughts and prayers are with Mark and Phoebe. RIP Julie. Alison x

I have been so sadden to hear the very sudden loss of Julie, for her family, friends and colleagues, it will be difficult to come to terms with and my thoughts are with them at this time. I first Met Julie in July 2013, when I was being introduced to HUC, I clearly remember standing in the call centre and talking to her about the 111 service, she was so enthusiastic and positive for HUC and what it could provide. Following this first meeting, Julie was very supportive when C&P first went live, I remember that very busy first Saturday morning and Julie was there to answer cards and give guidance, it was very reassuring to have someone with experience of 111 when we were all so new. Julie soon became the person to go to with pathway problems and she helped to set up our very successful audit team, I know some of those team members will feel especially sad. Julie would always help with new projects and give guidance when needed. she was very practical and never flapped and would always come with a solution on how we could manage a new project. We will all remember her with fondness and I am sure through our everyday lives in HUC she will not be forgotten. With Love Sally. xxx

I'd look forward to working with Julie at HUC whenever I came in for a meeting about quality improvements and delivering new services. She was a force for change, fiercely passionate about the work that had a direct impact on patients and colleagues. She would often mention her family and was especially very proud of her daughter Phoebe. Really shocked and saddened, she will be very much missed.

Dear Mark & Phoebe It's difficult to know what to write and knowing this will never be enough to assuage your grief, but I hope the memories us at work have shared of Julie will bring comfort in the times to come without her. I have worked with Julie since I started at HUC in 2014, she was always 'there' offering water, tea/toast, a friendly smile when we worked on the phones in busy periods. She was an ambassador and protector for the HA's, her favourite saying was 'come on, you know, don't be too harsh on them, they have a lot to do' - she was so easy going and gentle. She quietly made way for me to join her team as an auditor and made me realise that I was good at what I did, for that, I will be forever grateful to her. What will I remember mostly about her? Her screeching round the corner of the HUC car park in her nifty sports car, her talking of meals that you Mark made her and how you always did the cooking at home, of how proud she was of you Phoebe whenever she spoke of you and mostly of her quiet, happy smiling face, wealth of knowledge and good grace. May your soul rest in peace Julie, quietly watch over your family and may God grant you eternal rest. With love, Louise & family xxxx

Sometimes it’s hard to write down what we feel, and it has been difficult to find the words and write a eulogy about our dear colleague Julie who has left this world so soon. There are so many lovely memories I have about Julie over the past 8 years of knowing her. I started at HUC early 2012 when the organisation was at its infancy, and the few people who were at HUC HQ enabled us all to get to know each other well and build a rapport. We were like family and I knew who everyone was;) My first impression of Julie in 2012 was how hardworking she was. She was a NHS pathways trainer who was dedicated as were others trying to implement the NHS 111 Herts Service to tight deadlines. I will always remember Julie as a positive, kind, quiet, friendly highly motivating and encouraging lady. I owe Julie alot in imparting knowledge to me about the DOS and NHS Pathways System in order for myself to train staff since 2013. Her belief in the importance of teamwork was paramount and reflected in her daily positive quotes on a board in the HQ Call Centre to motivate our staff and bring us all together to work as a team and ultimately try and deliver our HUC goals. I will miss Julie dearly. She was such a wonderful unique human being who brought the best out of people. I will also miss asking her where she got all her lovely shirts and coats from. Such a stylish lady! I have attached a few photos in the images section of Julie as a quizmaster at our HUC Quiz we held a few years ago and a ice skating social event-Wonderful happy memories. My heart is with you Phoebe and Mark during this difficult time- “ A beautiful Soul is never forgotten and remains alive in our hearts forever” x

Words failed me when I first heard about this beautiful lady's passing, still cannot believe I won't feel Julie's warmth around the call centre anymore. Always there with us, always so positive, always helpful. You were one of the first people I met when I started my shifts in 2015, you made us all feel safe and needed. I would say to new starters when floor walking to look out for you if they needed help as you wouldn't let them down. Those crazy Bank Holidays were made easier by you appearing at the side of us whilst we were on a call, waiting for a pause to take our orders for lattes/tea cakes/hot cross buns (depending on the season) I would tell friends I didn't get that service from former colleagues! You were the epitome of what every employer needs, approachable, knowledgeable, professional,, thinking of others and just so lovely to have around. I am going to remember the last time I saw you in March as you made me laugh then and it leaves me with another fond memory of you. I hope Mark and Phoebe find a way to pull through after such devastating news. Life will go on in time because it does, though there will be one beautiful face missing. Thinking of you both and the rest of Julie's family and friends at this difficult time.

Life at HUC without Julie is absolutely unthinkable. I'm still in utter disbelief that she is gone. There is too much to say about her, too much I will miss. Pretty much the first thing I learnt when I joined HUC is how to spell and pronounce Kropacz, that's how integral she was. I'm sure everyone else did too... I have felt so sad and shocked these last few days. I will miss her sense of humour, her wry wit - saying something in 3 words that I need 20 for - and her MASSIVE knowledge and expertise. What Julie didn't know wasn't worth knowing. She was always so supportive, always there when you needed her. Over the years, Julie was an inspiration for all of us, her passion, her discipline and dedication. I remember in one of my first wider team meetings, she was incredibly passionate about our patients - that ethos has inspired me ever since. I loved Julie and will miss her enormously. Her legacy, from this page alone, is immense, and our HUC team will do our best to do her proud. She will never be forgotten.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Julies passing. I recall first meeting Julie when she did shifts as a driver for HUC. I have had the opportunity to work closely with her since the inception of NHS 111 in 2011 and we shared a healthy and enjoyable working relationship underpinned by mutually respectful friendship. Whenever I went to HUC, Julie would always be welcoming and ever approachable, she will be truly missed.

I truly don’t even know where to start. The past few days feel like a blur and it still feels surreal . What can I say about our Julie.. .... I have worked very closely with Julie for 4 years now, I joined a very strong team who had high standards. Julie was very protective of her team and the reputation of HUC. She gave me the support and encouragement to grow into my role even when I doubted myself. She was always there to push me outside of my comfort zone and then step back and say “see I knew you could do it” . There are soooo many memories we share. A simple look at each other and we would know what each one was thinking or her seeing my puzzled face and she immediately knew I needed some help. She was my mentor at work and without her I would not have been able to do the role I do today. We have had many days at work where we have laughed so much we have ended up in tears. There have been times when our team have had to be told to keep quiet as we have laughed so loudly. Julie was the most humble, selfless woman I have know, she was an ambassador for HUC and always stood for what was right. Julie thank you for being you. The most inspirational, dedicated and humble person I have had the pleasure to have known. You have touched so many lives and you will always hold a very special place in my heart. May your beautiful soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to Mark and Phoebe and I pray that you find a way to cope with your loss. You’ll be missed forever Julie xx ❤️

I was very saddened and shocked to hear of Julie's passing. She was the consummate professional at all times and always went the extra mile to help whenever she could or steer you in the right direction. She had a sixth sense about her and knew exactly when you needed help, advice, support and nothing was ever too much trouble for her. Above all above it is her professionalism, wonderful personality, dedicaton and keen sense of humour for which I will remember and miss her hugely. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and colleagues at this time. RIP Julie,

I’m so shocked and saddened to hear this sad news. It is really hard to pick one memory when I have so many memories of you Julie. I had the pleasure and honoured to work so closely with Julie, she was so hard working, very supportive and had a wealth of knowledge. If I had to sum her up in one word I would say she was ‘HUC’. Julie was very helpful and approachable. She knew she can call me anytime to do something on the DoS, even 8am on Saturday morning as well, she knew we could count on each other. I cannot believe she is no longer with us….Julie you will be missed terribly. She is no longer with us…but only retired a little from our sight…she will live in our thoughts and memories forever. I will miss you so much Julie. Sending my love and comfort to the family. RIP Julie.

It is with great sadness that I am writing this. Julie to me was extremely professional, knowledgeable and passionate about what she did and very protective of HUC as she was proud about the service. We would often have ‘debates’ as provider and commissioner which I admired and enjoyed and dare I say, looked forward to and in the end we would agree on a solution and the just get on and deliver…there was no nonsense and I fully respected Julie for this...this I will miss. Whenever I would visit HUC and Julie was about we would always have a catch-up talking about everything and anything…this I will miss. Then we would meet up at regional and national events a go from provider/commissioner to ‘Team Hertfordshire’, so I was always happy to know that she was attending…this I will miss. Julie was a pleasure to work with and be around, always made me feel welcomed and amongst it all there was laughs…this I will miss. I am glad that I had the pleasure of knowing and working with you over the past 5 years…will miss you Julie x

How can I choose just one memory when my mind has been running wild with all of the wonderful times we shared together. Julie trained me when I first joined HUC in 2009, we would share Call Handling and District Nurse shifts together but then 111 was born and Julie and I together with some other colleagues were the first trainers to be trained and it was all riding on us passing our Pathways course. It was then that I knew how special our friendship was and it just grew and grew from there. My heart is hurting and without you I feel like I'm lost. We were the A Team, the Dream Team and we would be called Jolie and Judy because we came together as a pair. Go-Lives, Long Weekends even Covid we tackled together as a team (a slightly bigger team) but we still did it together. Julie was and will always be remembered as the heart and soul of HUC, she made everyone recognise their true potential, especially me and for this I will be forever grateful. May you rest in peace knowing that we will do everything in our power to continue to make you proud. You are and always will be an inspiration and when the time is right for Phoebe and Mark to read through these messages, you have both been in my thoughts and will continue to be forever. Jodie x

Julie has been a constant presence in HUC ever since I joined the company in early 2013. My over riding memory of Julie was during busy bank holidays, Christmas and Easter weekends when she was the first to provide support for health advisors, making sure we had a drink, handing out a slice of buttered toast here or a piece of hot cross bun there or sweets and treats to help us through. Very much appreciated and typical of Julie to think of others and how they were doing. As I progressed through the company, Julie was always approachable and extremely helpful at all times, a ready smile on her face. HUC will be all the poorer for not having her as part of the team but I know that Julie was very much loved and respected by her colleagues. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family. Please know that Julie was thought of highly by us all and we will miss her every day.
