He made people laugh, he comforted them, he pranked them, he gave them his broad shoulders to lean on. He stood out - not just because of his towering personality, but also because of his large-heart in which thousands lived. He was a beloved husband, father, nana, mamu, jija-ji - filling these roles with his love, his friendly boxing punches, his chuckles, his mimicry, his mentoring and sharing his vast knowledge on so many things: from cricket to world history to western movies.

I met him through his daughter Rachna and instantly knew where she got her sharp humour from. There was never a dull moment with him.... The endless stories of Kolkata, the street food, Park street and the legendary Chhabi Biswas whom Uncle knew personally. In between all these there were some intelligent and witty remarks.... Which made me realise that there was a man of knowledge amidst us! Of all these, what I loved was the warmth I received from him. I will miss the messages from Rachna asking me to drop in as Uncle was looking for me. Or miss making the fish curry with mustard sauce that he loved. I am also poorer today in the loss of the man with pure selfless affection. Your memories will be with us Uncle.
