Although quiet and unassuming, Steve was incisively sharp and quick-witted, a voracious reader and board game enthusiast, multiple sports fanatic, as well as being a life-long Partick Thistle supporter and Bob Dylan aficionado. Most of all he was the most loving dad and husband, whose wisdom and gentle humour will be missed every day. As Steve's funeral is being held in Cyprus and it may not be possible for you to attend, Eileen, Ceirah & Kellen would truly appreciate you sharing any memories, stories, photos or messages in the condolence section below that you may have of Steve. Christmas wine evening at the Annabelle. Spectacular food and wonderful wines. Ooooo I’ll miss Steve his quick wit and humour will stay with me some. I’m giggling as I write this - at different wine event when covid allowed last year - Steve asked where my young man was? Yikes.. a girl doesn’t always want to admit the truth, however I replied ‘ he was more in love with his ego - than he was with me. …….. so I let him go. So I find myself ‘between trapeze’s ‘ Whew… within a heartbeat Steve came back with ‘you need to keep both feet on one wire? OMG. We were hysterically laughing. Have as much fun as you can…. Golly What a great guy….

I met Eileen & Steve at a wine event at Labyrinth pafos - 2018 - we laughed - we drank delicious wines - Nicos presented a wonderful dinner. This was the beginning of many many wonderful shared times together. This photo is from coral bay - Andria steak restaurant with G & T ( fab company ) I’m a full vegan so for me the location wasn’t up there? However - life is not about the food or the wine ? It’s about the company - sharing time is the greatest gift all. Fabulous times oh boy ‘ we were the giggling and a tiny bit serious - well maybe not… Simply wonderful company - wonderful times.

We have so many great memories of Steve from the Choueifat days as I know many people have. However I'd like to share memories from our Silver wedding anniversary when Phil and i celebrated by making our first return trip to the Emirates in over twenty years. Steve came to our hotel to pick us up and as we walked into the foyer there he was with his big smile and the years just melted away. That was it - Steve and Eileen simply slotted us back into the Sharjah social scene, making us so welcome and showing us so much hospitality. We felt like we'd never left. Together we went on a trip down memory lane visiting Choueifat and the Wanderers club and.had picnics on the beach and boat trips like the 'old days' . Steve was our willing chauffeur and guide , showing us all the places we remembered and introducing us to all the changes since we left . We are so grateful to Steve ( and Eileen of course!) for making our anniversary trip so memorable. it wouldn't have been anywhere near as much fun if we hadn't spent it with you. Steve was such a lovely fella. He'll be greatly missed by all - We are thinking of you Eileen Ceirah and Kellen and sending you our thoughts and love. Lynda and Phil xxxxxx

We are deeply sorry to hear about Steve. During our time living and working in Sharjah, Steve was a great friend, colleague and neighbour. Although we hadn’t seen each other for many years we remember him with huge affection-especially sundowners on the balcony, water skiing, football and tennis matches for the famed Sharjah Wanderers, being a member of the Bedlam Brothers band, and for all the other wonderful adventures we shared together. Go well, Steve. Our thoughts are with you Eileen, Ceirah and Kellen. With much love, Frank and Judi xxx

Dear Eileen, Ceirah and Kellen, That's such a lovely photo and perfectly captures Steve's character and love for life. So so many memories of Steve so I'll try and share some with you and the friends on this site who all love Steve. Playing football alongside Steve many decades ago for Wanderers and for Lilley’s teams. Days on Hamariyah Beach with Steve skiing and Fridays on the Hut Beach when Steve would roll out of the car and lie down on the beach to recuperate from a typical Thursday night's entertainment or as Steve said on more than one occasion ‘'I'm preparing for my cribbage match”. Monday evenings spent at the Wanderers playing Doubles tennis with Vodka and Orange refreshments at the end of each set and Steve's strokeplay was so good he barely broke into a sweat as he had the court covered and ran us ragged. After the tennis it was straight into the Wanderers bar for the Take That Quiz team and Steve was a very very good asset in a quiz and somehow knew that the Falklands flag has a Ram on it (or was it a Ewe Steve)? On Bonfire Nights Steve would take on the role of Amateur Fireworks Expert trying to light up very dodgy fireworks he had found in the backstreets of Rolla Square and part of the excitement was whether the rockets would actually go up in the air or simply explode on the ground. I remember the first time Steve did his infamous firewalk through the red hot coals of a campfire on Hamariya Beach...... and with everyone cheering he then walked back calmly through the coals again. Although Steve loved a cold beer he could never bring himself to actually buy a bag of ice to put in a cool box to take to the beach. On more than one occasion our birthday present to Steve was a bag of ice. For his 40th birthday his nearest and dearest friends clubbed together to buy him a bar fridge to chill the beers and his reaction was priceless but unprintable. Steve certainly had his quirky and some might say obstinate side including his battle of many years with the Wanderers committee as he objected to Martin Johnson’s framed rugby shirt being put up in the Main bar at the club……. He wouldn’t let that go and he can rest easy knowing he won that battle as of yesterday it is nowhere in sight at the club. Desert camps and our first crossing of the Empty Quarter towards Liwa where Steve had managed to borrow a VHS video camera to film the trip including strapping the camera to the roof rack. Legendary parties in your villas in Ajman and Sharjah and quiet nights that turned into very noisy ones. Upside down Vodka jelly snorting was invented in your Ajman villa. Dressing up in Tartan for Burns Nights and Dancing Reels and Wheels crashing into furniture and Stripping Willows. One garment party with Steve checking at the door that only one garment was being worn. So many amazing Christmas’s together as we all created our ‘extended Sharjah family’ including the Marquee in the desert complete with Albert Abela Stuffed Turkey and Santa Claus arriving over a sand dune which was a true standout memory of expat life back in the 80’s. Steve’s Sharjah version of ‘THE OSCARS’ with unique categories such as most outrageous drunken performance, Most embarrassing moment of the year. So many birthday celebrations and weddings as we all grew up together with Steve and Eileen at the core of our inner circle of friends and Steve always rock solid, full of wisdom and with a fair and balanced view of life, a big booming laugh that came from his whole body, a proud Scotsman and Bob Dylan’s number one fan. Steve was a true pillar of the expat community, a tremendous Husband, family man and a wonderful dad and although he has left us he will live on in Ceirah and Kellen. Rest Easy Steve

As part of the Knight’s world for the past 36 years it is impossible to imagine being without Steve. The Hutchison’s are our second family and Steve a very dear true best friend and second dad. Together we have covered the full gamut of events, supporting each other through births, deaths, marriages and numerous fun and crazy celebrations. Steve’s steady advice and kindness has helped us in many situations. and we are forever indebted for this. However, it is the fun days on the beach, tennis court, birthdays, anniversaries, numerous parties and travelling together that we hold most dear. When Steve & Eileen retired to Cyprus it took little persuasion to follow and to continue the journey. The last five years have been extra special days, exploring the countryside and our many wine tasting road trips. Even when Steve began to slow down and fail physically we enjoyed regular games of Rumikub - Steve’s sharp mind never faltered and he always quietly controlled the game. Our last Sunday together was spent enjoying another a game (which he won) and then reminiscing over a group photo of his Sharjah friends. He talked of everyone with fondness and in detail. Our final parting was leaving Steve in repose doing what he enjoyed most - watching a Sunday afternoon football match, his eyes focused on the TV as we bid farewell. Despite his failing health and difficulties Steve never complained, he was always composed and content. We lucked out having Steve as a true friend. We cherish all the happy times together. His knowing look, endearing smile and wise words will stay with the Knight family always and all the wonderful memories will be treasured in our hearts forever.

When we were reminiscing about all the trips and holidays that we had together when we were younger, in particular our national lampoons style trips to LA stand out. Steve having to go to Disneyland with us in his tennis whites and socks that had been turned pink in the wash along with all our clothes too! We were the Pink Gang for our trip to DisneyLand, the culprit a red Fido Dido Tshirt from a market in Dubai! We laughed about that for years after. Also the video camera was fairly new at that time I remember Steve and Eileen leaving it on accidentally and filming everything haha until the battery ran out. We discovered free pitcher refills at Pizza Hut that year but didn’t put the lid on the pitchers properly and were left swimming in Coca Cola in our hired cars. In later years we holidayed in Cyprus in Paphos and stayed at Steve’s flat that he had bought many years before. We remember Steve and Eileen taking us to lots of amazing places and introducing us to the meze (a meal with a million courses that never ends!). Steve took us to some fabulous places and I will go back to this later. Firstly, I remember a trip with my mum and Steve in the leading car and Eileen and dad in my car. We were following Steve to go to a restaurant or maybe see a sight and Steve believed he knew where it was but as the road got rockier and the boulders got bigger and bigger we decided that we better look at a map! I just remember Eileen shouting “Steve, Steve..aw you can’t be serious Steve”. Although because we were in different cars her shouts went unheard we went and went until we couldn’t drive anymore! We were children and I remember finding it hysterical. Lastly I remember a trip to Cyprus when we were just with Steve (I don’t know why? We must’ve been waiting for Eileen and Ceriah and Kellen to come out). Steve had had trouble getting out of Dubai because of a minor road accident and his passport had been taken away temporarily. He was really happy to be on holiday and we went every day to a very secluded rocky cove that had a fishing shack on it. We snorkelled and bought watermelons from the ladies working in the fields nearby. It was like paradise. Steve was always laid back on holiday and we had many fun family trips together and made lots of memories. He loved reading and would often lie on the couch or on the beach on holiday and read books. We laughed and listened to old Billy Connolly sketches that Steve had as records in the flat. He was a great adult in our lives when we were younger and an unconditional friend to my parents and us as a family throughout our lives as we got older. ❤️ Megan+Claire Xxxx

I don’t know where to start with my memories of Steve there are so many. All the wonderful gatherings at Anniesland Mansions. Steve driving to rescue us when we had broken down in freezing cold conditions with Megan as a baby in the car. Talking to Megan about our memories we both laughed about so many occasions. Our outing to Disney in our matching pink outfits ! Staying in a house that was nothing more than a building site! Steve the intrepid explorer in Cyprus driving off road for miles in our rather dodgy hired cars! Taking us to so many lovey places. We used to get together for Ceirah’s birthdays at Rockcliff which were wonderful picnics on the beach. I have no memory of Steve ever being angry but always so easy going and laid back. Always a generous and hospitable host, most recently he met Gloria and I at Paphos airport, gave us a car and generally looked after us for our stay. He’s an irreplaceable lifelong friend who will be so sadly missed. Lots and lots of love to you and Ceirah and Kellen Xxxx Jenny

Steve has been a great friend for many, many years. Found memories of numerous camping trips both in the desert and on the beach. While Steve was often the one to bring a bit of sanity to these occasions, he was always up for some excitement being it vehicle hide and seek in the desert or midnight water skiing at Hamriyah. As long as he had his full fat milk at breakfast he was a happy man.

I remember that we arrived in Sharjah at about the same time as you guys and first met Steve at a ‘wet’ Christmas party in 1982. That must have been before Sharjah banned Christmas and alcohol! I’m sure it was Steve who first told me about the no licence required ‘hole in the wall’ in Umm Al Quwain. He was a man who would freely share important information such as this! Life was good and social in those early days of being an expat. Steve and Eileen you both embraced this fully and it was always a pleasure to ‘bump into’ you. On occasions we would bump into Steve at the Chinese on Ajman beach where, on a Friday, we may have been there for a meal and a drink of their famous ‘tea’ ummm. Steve would be popping in for a takeaway after a day on the beach. Food or a party were constant themes in those chance meetings with the other constant being that it was always a pleasure to see Steve: to enjoy his warm personality and good nature. Steve was a social, friendly and welcoming conversationalist. He had a good sense of humour and fun where his face and eyes would light up and fall into that Hutch smile. Steve was an easy person to talk to: interesting and genuinely interested in you and what you had to say. Steve was one of the first people we met socially in Sharjah and it was Steve and Eileen treating us to a meal in Carters, who were the last people we saw when leaving Dubai in 2011. We will remember Steve as someone who was a perfect compliment to Eileen. He was generous of spirit, interesting and interested. Someone who could make you feel special and who was special himself. Someone who will live on in our hearts through the memories that he created by being Steve. Thank you for being part of our lives, Steve. Mike and Lynda

I first met Steve 50 years ago when we were both at Jordanhill teacher training college. Shortly after our first meeting I noticed he was spending more and more time with a rather stunning young woman in a shaggy (and somewhat smelly) Afghan coat! Since then Steve and Eileen were always in our lives. I worked with Steve in Clydebank tech for 2 years. We followed them to Athens for 6 months which for us turned into 6 years! The time in Greece we spent together was when I got to know him best. His obsession with Partick Thistle, our mutual love for Dylan’s music, playing darts and drinking in seedy Athens bars - he really wasn’t very good, but we let him join the team anyway! Singing “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue” in the “British Club” an act of cultural anarchy. Then all those years when lives diverge, children get born and you think time is endless. We’d meet up from time to time. In Glasgow, North Wales, Cyprus, Greece. Always the deep friendship effortlessly rekindled. One of the permanent fixtures in my life is gone Steve. But for me you will “Stay Forever Young” .

I will always remember Steve with such fondness, it has been such a privilege to have been able to consider him a good friend. The first time I met him would have been in 1988 when Eileen was hosting the 'stage welcome meeting' at the Hutchison house. What an afternoon! It was just the beginning of many years of fun and friendship. Steve welcomed me into his home and into his family and made my stay in Sharjah so enjoyable I was a regular visitor after my Choueifat days were over. He was so patient, which he demonstrated when he tried to teach me how to water ski during our weekend visits to the beach (he could have made a fortune on You've Been Framed with my disastrous attempts!). His parties were legendary and I spent many a fun afternoon/evening/night in the company of Eileen and Steve, thank you Steve for putting up with all my silly antics when I got into the party spirit. Thank you for welcoming my family into your home too, Michael has fond memories of Steve sneaking him into the Wanderers bar for a shandy and Clare has loved our visits to all the lovely restaurants and bars in Cyprus. How can I ever forget sitting at the beach side with Steve and Eileen with a Miami Vice cocktail in my hand, what a joy. Your love of quizzes was shared by myself and Clare and my general knowledge improved on my visits to Cyprus. It was great to be part of your winning team. You will be sorely missed but we have lots of happy memories to keep that smile on our faces as we think of the happy times that we shared. Rest in Peace Steve. xxx

Given that I knew you for the best part of 50 years it seems incredible that you are no longer around. From the very beginning of your courtship of Eileen you showed me only friendship and support. The hospitality both you and Eileen showed in Glasgow, Athens, Sharjah, Ajman and Cyprus was never less than outstanding. The memories take little encouragement to come flooding back. Going to see Pananthanikos play in Europe in 1978 after my ill fated train journey to Athens is a story I still tell people to this day. My first Christmas in the UAE in 1989 when a marquee tent and caterers were hired for a never to be forgotten Christmas Day in the desert. These are two of the more memorable events in the rich tapestry of our lives. More recently two lockdowns were spent together and it says a lot that apart from shouting at you to turn Bob Dylans 17 minute single off, there was rarely a cross word. Your death will leave a large hole in amny people’s lives, especially Eileen, Ceirah and Kellen, but also mine. Thanks for the memories

I first met Steve at the legendary Sharjah Wanderers Club in 1988. I had left Scotland to come and work at Al Ma’arifa School. I was 25, naive, wet behind the ears and trying to make sense of this whole new, bewildering world. My accommodation was a not very luxurious flat in Rolla Square. I had gone out to get some groceries and was bewildered by the sea of subcontinental faces. I had read that the UAE was 80% ex-patriot. I couldn’t understand where everyone else was…I thought an ex patriot was a white person from Britain! I started at the school and someone said, you need to go to this club called The Sharjah Wanderers, you will meet people there. A few days later, Abigail, my new flat mate and I got into a taxi, much deliberation later, the driver finally found it and we stumbled into the Wanderers. We sat by the pool and thought…ok, this is looking a bit more optimistic; this looks like it might be a pleasant place to hang out. I saw Steve by the pool, heard his accent and we started to chat. He was absolutely the most reassuring person that I had met since I had boarded that plane. He was chatty, warm, friendly and funny. He filled us in on how this whole ex-Pat malarkey all worked and reassured us that we would find life in Sharjah most agreeable. At the end of the conversation, he said…you need to meet my wife Eileen…I think you two would get on well… The rest is history! ❤️ A wonderful, affable, good natured, gentle, humorous man…truly one of life’s greats. Steve, you will be sorely missed.

Steve was a true gentleman, you both were so kind and welcoming when we visited and showed us all your favourite places…..Steve was THE best chauffeur ever ;-). We will hold our memories close and remember him with fondness….sending love and hugs to you all, Brian And Teresa xxx

At the end of one of the many men's lunches I attended with Steve, he was kind enough to offer me a lift up the road to Ruth's house, where we would join our ladies. 'That'd be great, Steve. Thanks', I said. There then followed what I can only describe as a short yet terrifying journey as Steve seemed to play chicken with cars coming from the opposite direction. Nonetheless, on arrival at Ruth's, I thanked Steve for the lift. Smiling knowingly at me he said, 'No problem. Eileen doesn't normally let me drive'.
