Ron Cutler

March 21, 1936 - August 15, 2020

Ron was for many of us, the heart of Lampeter Students Union. In a truly unique location, he was a one of a kind character - always there to listen, to chat and to hug! He played such a large part in many people's time in Lampeter. With his distinctive West Bromwich accent, that never softened despite his years in Wales, he gave his heart and soul to the Students' Union making it the safe and welcoming place it was for so many of us. In short, quite simply a lovely man to know.

I had the pleasure of working with you Ron at the Students Union for many years. You were always lovely and kind and we had many fun staff parties with you and Debs. I remember writing a song “We love Ron Ron we love our Ron” which we sang to the tune of Do Run Run Run at your retirement do. Many happy special memories of the Old Man of the Sea which I will always cherish. Rest in peace Ron you will be missed xxx

I worked with Ron for a happy four years. He was my boss, my friend and occasionally my confidant. He had a potty mouth and a strong accent which was always amusing to watch new staff try and work out what he was saying. I left University knowing nothing about Archaeology but everything about working a bar and 22 years later I am still in the same trade and that's thanks to Ron's help, knowledge and giving me the confidence I needed. I didn't keep in contact and I've always kicked myself for it but he was a wonderful boss and I'm heartbroken to hear of his passing. Sending all my love, Olivia.

Ron gave me a job behind the bar in my first year at Lampeter, and I kept it all through my time at university. In my final year, Ron trained me to run the bar, which I loved, and this experience led to me becoming a license at the age of 23. Ron was so very kind to us all, he didn't suffer fools gladly, but really looked after us. In a way he was like a dad to many of us who were away from home for the first time. I learned so much from Ron, and never forgot the chance he gave me all those years ago. Ron was respected and loved by so many of us, he called everyone "Babs" or "Son" and gave the best hugs ever!

Ron, the only Northerner that I genuinely needed an interpreter for! A truly nice man, who gave a great backbreaking bear hug! xxx

Ron - I had the joy of working in the Union with you from very early on during my time at Lampeter and as such got to know you early on too. I graduated and got to stay on working with you. Working as your assistant was some of my greatest times at Lampy - learning the ropes from you to play my part in making the Union what it was. I always treasured your advice and your stories! The day you handed me ‘Ron the Gnome’ and walked out over the bridge at the back of the Union on your last day was one of the saddest days for me, especially knowing I had such big shoes to fill. I was honoured to be able to keep in touch afterwards (although not as much as I would have liked) and particularly pleased to have you at my wedding - thus making it the full Lampeter experience. Thank you. RIP

The day this chap was handed over to me was a very special one. I've kept him safe ever since.
