Peter Sheen

March 25, 1928 - May 5, 2020

Peter was a generous and loving father, brother, grandfather and friend. Tenacious and energetic throughout most of his life, Peter's out-going personality, compassion for others, warmth and character brought him admiration and respect wherever he went. A raconteur with a wicked sense of humour, Peter's life has been rich and full and he enjoyed sharing the tales of his adventures with us all. We will miss him so much.

EULOGY: This takes the form of a short letter from Mandy, Merril & Gill. Dearest Dad, Thank you for being our beloved Papa. We're so grateful to you for so many things and our lives have been enriched by your presence. You've been a generous and loving Father to us our whole lives - never wavering in your loyalty and protection and we thank you for being with us for so long! We want to thank you for giving us a pioneer spirit, a love of travel and adventure, of pushing boundaries and challenging norms! Thank you, Dad, for imparting in us a love of family, friendship and community. For passing on to us your compassion for others, your outgoing personality and your absolute loyalty to those you value. Thank you for being a loving brother to Phil and Mike, a doting Grandad to your ten beloved Grandchildren and a loyal friend to many. Thank you for passing on to us your love of history, your fascination with the past and the thrill of discovering old railway tracks and the nostalgic whistle of a steam train. Thank you for encouraging us to believe in ourselves and to be strong, self-sufficient and resolute in our lives. We're grateful you were such a hilarious character of a man! Your warmth, sense of fun and wicked sense of humour we can only hope to match! Thank you for passing on and living to the fullest one of your favourite themes - a quote from General Douglas McArthur: 'Age is not a time of your life - it's a state of mind." And thank you, Dad, for trusting us towards the end of your life with your quiet faith, your vulnerability and your frailty. You were - and are - and always will be - an inspiration. All our love, Mandy, Merril and Gill xxxxxx

From Martin Lambert : Such a sad loss - and especially at this time when movements are understandably restricted. My first encounters with Peter were more towards the end of his illustrious career in the motorcycle industry as I, being recently taken on by Michael Evans at Westminster Communications, tried to understand the job of representing the motorcycle industry to the media and "getting people onto two wheels" - something Peter had a passion for. I have to admit that naively I thought everyone in the industry was just like Peter, dedicated, knowledgeable, full of enthusiasm and ideas and with an abiding passion for powered two wheelers. Echoing what others have already said, I found Peter to be a stickler for detail pushing people to do their best yet ready to let those best suited to get on and execute the task in hand. To some, at times, he may have seen officious yet that glint in his eye was never far away and, when something amused him, he could fall into a heap of giggles. The Club and the UK motorcycle industry were blessed to count Peter among their number; a man who walk the walk and talked the talk God speed Peter.

From Dan Sager : Like everyone else, I remember Peter as the epitomy of the English gent. His Llangollen run sticks in my mind; I followed him out of the hotel on the Saturday morning, as he led us into the misty Welsh mountains. Eventually all I could see was the tail light on his BMW 650 single. When we stopped for coffee he was completely unruffled (unlike me). I also recall spending very entertaining time with him at the recent Barnsley run, learning about his time at Francis Barnett.

From Nick Jeffery : Such sad news. I spoke with Peter only a few weeks ago and found him as enthusiastic as ever. As one of the ‘senior members’ I first met him in the 1970s when he was with Shell and subsequently his devotion to both the motorcycling movement as a whole and The Club in particular shone so brightly. I’m sure no- one who was on that wonderful Spring 1992 run to Normandy can forget his infinite attention to detail exemplified by the dayglo armbands issued so we didn’t get mixed up with the hoi polloi! And those wonderful runs from Lake Vyrnwy. Truly a remarkable man. I would like to participate in the ride if possible.

From Neil Tuxworth : This is such sad news to receive about the passing of our good friend Peter Sheen. Peter was a key player during my year’s in motorcycle racing during the 1960’s/70’s and 80’s. He was an icon of the motorcycle industry and he represented what is so good about most people who are involved in our industry. It is so sad that he caught this awful virus that is affecting the whole World at this difficult time we are all living through. My thoughts go to Peter’s family and friends and may he rest in peace.

From Tony Dawson : Shocked and saddened by news of us losing our most respected Peter Sheen. I learned a lot from Peter when we spent a run together in my VW Transporter Van acting as RAC back-up! I tried my hardest to put the 'willies' up Peter trying to replicate the two wheels of a m/cycle round some very tight bends but he never flinched! He was a great inspiration to us all and will never be forgotten. With deepest sympathy to Peters family.

From Keith Davies : How very sad!  I always viewed Peter as a very special man representing all that was good from a very special generation of Brits.  As others have said he was kind, unfailingly polite, thoughtful and someone we could always count on for wise guidance. Despite his increasingly difficult health issues he never lost his magic power of enthusiasm. A lesson for us all there. God bless Peter.

From Greg Elson: Such sad news in these already troubled times. Peter was particularly kind to me when I first joined the Club. After the first dinner he took off his Club tie and gave it to me so I would not be fined in the future. A very thoughtful man, whose death is a great loss to us all. If it is possible to be part of accompanying the Hearse, I would like to show my respects.

From Maurice Knight: A remarkable Gentleman sparks many memories. It had been a wonderful summer and Peter telephoned me to see if I was attending a motor cycle event at Goodwood and if so, would I like to join him. He would pick me up at a well known Hotel just outside Croydon at about 9.30 am. I duly arrived early so ordered a coffee and sat on the terrace overlooking the spacious Lawn. The next thing that happened was a Helicopter landing in front of me!!  Out jumped Peter, “Morning Maurice loverly morning “. As though he had just arrived in a 4 door saloon! That was Peter always full of surprises.

Grandad, I cherish how cool of a Grandad you were to me and my siblings. I remember you asking me to be your passenger in the scorpion as we drove to the airfield. You drove so fast, I kept thinking if we hit a bump we would fly so far up in the sky. Thank you for the memories in Mallorca and the stories I will never forget. Josh x

This was the last time I met with Peter in March 2018. Lunch at the Flying Club dear boy! He was in good spirits as you can see. I first met Peter when I joined the MCI where he was Director General. He was a great boss - the best - and really looked after his staff. I learned so much from him during my time there. Since then, our contact was largely through the industry motorcycle club and I, and others, have a multitude of very happy memories of times spent riding and socialising in the UK and abroad. Peter was one of a kind. I could always count on birthday and Xmas cards from him, all with a cheery greeting. I’ll remember his love of truisms (e.g. “Time spent on reconnaissance is never wasted”) and his meticulous attention to detail. Most of all though, I’ll remember him as a charming, caring and thoughtful gentleman and friend. God bless Peter

Papa- there are so many wonderful memories I have of you! As young children we loved being in the garden and pointing at a plane and asking you- “ where is that plane going to?” And you would say the names of different countries! You were always the person to ask questions to and I learnt so many things from you and caught your love for travel and adventure and transport!! I was so proud of having a Dad who took us on adventures abroad or motorcycle club runs that I think my school friends were jealous and fed up with my boasting! When I was 21 and on a clinical placement in Oxford- you arrived on my doorstep and all I could see were flowers and your feet- the bouquet was so huge! It was a lovely surprise! Although I loved the very active and busy Dad who took us to night clubs in London and I loved your dancing- I cherished also the slower pace as you got older in recent years and after your stroke- walking with you to the duck pond holding your hand. I loved driving you in your car and following your precise instructions and directions! We loved celebrating New Year with you in Derbyshire this year and I drove you home and we sang songs all the way- for hours and chatted! Wonderful precious memories - thank you Papa for enriching my life and our families lives and so many people who you were a father figure to! Gilly xx

A Salute to Peter Sheen from California, USA I will never forget the beautiful early May day I met Peter at the Son Vida Sheraton in Palma, Mallorca where I was attending an international motorcycle business conference. Having attended this yearly event many times before and therefore knowing everyone, Peter must have discerned that I was the newcomer from the States and he approached me straightaway, resplendent in dapper duds and a fabulous tan. After introductions, he proceeded with my interrogation. “Are you a motorcyclist?” to which I replied, certainly. “Right then, are you going the TT next month?”. I was gobsmacked and asked in return if he meant the Isle of Man TT, to which he replied “Why yes, of course and every proper motorcyclist must experience the TT at least once!” . I returned with “In my dreams!”. Peter then proceeded to lay out instructions for making my way to London the following year and he would take care of arranging everything else. I was speechless. We got to know each other during the conference and he told me of his brothers Phil in Texas and Mike in Canada, his love for steam trains (“I get excited when the kettle boils!”) and desire to see the American West. That was the start of a long and storied relationship that found Peter and I reuniting the following May in Newport Beach, California where I was responsible for hosting the BPICM Spring Congress on behalf of the American industry organization. I had recently crashed on a motocross motorbike and was nursing a broken left hand, three fractured ribs and a broken right clavicle. Needless to say, I needed help getting my suit on and Peter obliged so I dubbed him Jeeves, the Butler. He was by my side the entire event and was indispensable in the performance of my duties as event host. We shared many, many adventures over the years on both sides of the Pond, including on my side, the Mojave Desert, the Pacific Coast Highway, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Nevada ghost towns, hot springs, steam trains and more motorcycle rides than I can count. Along the way, Peter met many of my friends who became part of the PRT Sheen Fan Club USA Chapter. I returned to the Isle of Man another 13 times, always with Peter and often joined by lucky friends and family. I spent many wonderful visits at Remember, No. 1 Landor Cottages on the Village Green, Letchmore Heath and shared many a pint and a meal with Peter’s family and friends. Jetting over for his gala 80 in 08 and 90th birthday bashes will be but a few of many lasting memories of PRT Sheen. Peter was also a great mentor to me as I advanced my career in the motorcycle industry. Nuggets of wisdom included “Better a surgeon with as scalpel than a butcher with an ax”, “The market will always win” and my favorite “Time spent on reconnaissance is seldom wasted”. If I had a dollar for every time I would preface words of sagacity with “As Peter Sheen would say…”, I could buy a round of drinks for all of his adoring family and friends, then we would raise our glasses high and proclaim, “To Peter Sheen and a life well lived!” Godspeed to my dear friend Peter. Sincerely, Paul Golde Rancho Relaxo, California

I realise while writing this I have known Peter for almost 90% of my life, I am 48 this year. Peter introduced to me to many things and taught me so much. The freedom of motorcycling, flying, travelling, a joy for adventure. My first flight in an aeroplane, in a helicopter, on a barge, on a motorcycle, Peter was there showing me the ropes, making sure we were safe, passing on his know-how and always having fun. Today I carry several of the little things I picked up along the way, like peeled tomatoes on toast for breakfast, an serious appreciation of Knickerbocker Glories, an ability to tie a sharp windsor knot, how to pop a bottle of champagne and just as importantly an understanding of the benefit of being polite and the importance of being smart. In August I won’t be receiving the birthday card, something Peter never, ever missed. Instead of shedding a tear, I ‘remember’, with a big smile, what a kind, wise, loyal, generous, fun man I shared a wonderful friendship with. Peter – ‘All the best’

For as long as I can remember, whenever our family car entered a stretch of straight road, one of us would usually ask “Who would love this road?” Dad, grandad and FIL of course. Funny thing is, we would say the same thing about a tricky winding road loaded with bends - “I know who would love this road!” So yes, Peter loved just about any road stretching out ahead of him, whatever the challenge it posed. That’s how I’ll think of him, burning up the tarmac, whether solo or with the Tanners Club on his tail, oftentimes (many years ago) with one of his lovely, loyal daughters riding pillion. Mr Planes, Trains and Automobiles, for sure. Boats too - we were lucky enough to spend a far-from-dry weekend on Sandpiper, shaken not stirred. My adventurous FIL (just how he signed his cards to his sons-in-law) will rightly be remembered for so many wonderful things. For me, he was so generous of spirit, so kind - Peter would always ask about ‘you’, always listen intently, carefully, and would always give time to your story, your life. He would be sure to find a compliment, a master at finding a way to make you feel good about yourself. This amazed me from a man who had achieved so much himself - he was humble and modest. I never stopped learning from him. Thank you, Peter.

Grandad always told the best tales. His life adventures made for incredible, long stories. My favourites were always of his trips away with my Mum and Aunties. He told them with such vivid enthusiasm and I loved hearing about all the naughty things they all got up to! His energy was infectious and I want to continue the Sheen Gene of being a risk taking, positive bon viveur!! I miss you already, fab Grandad xxx
