Thomas Mateides

10 augustus 1970 - 7 maart 2020

Tommy passed away after a long and brave battle with Cancer. He left behind a heart-broken family that will miss his quirky sense of humour and his amazing personality. We hope to share your memories and messages with his young son in the years to come. We hope your messages will help him to see his father from his friend’s and his family’s perspective and to help him understand that the spirit lives on in those whose lives we touch as well as those we leave behind. Thank you.

It’s hard to summarise my Uncle Tom in a short paragraph and justify how amazing and much I looked up to him as a child and throughout my adult life. His term ‘our kid’ is something that I always remember him calling me and his kind, caring and generous manner is something I will never forget. His style is something that I always admired and took to my own style with the back to front baseball caps and cool boots. Tom was a person who always put everyone first and I remember as a kid playing a game of cards or backgammon when I went round even at time when he probably just wanted to watch the football (who he would beat me most of time). His love of Prince rubbed off on me too as a fan and whenever I hear any song from Prince I think of Tom. An early memory is when we went to see Chelsea vs Southampton in the FA cup and had to sit in the home stand with the other Tommy and Efty sitting on the other side stand away from us. Remember we were reluctant to cheer when Chelsea scored being Arsenal and Spurs fans and could just about clap and finding it hard to show we didn’t want them to win. Of more recent I have had the honour of being chosen alongside my other Uncle Tom to be Rafael’s godfathers. Rafael will learn when he grows up how funny, bubbly and charismatic his father was and he will never be forgotten as his legacy is continued through Rafael. Tom you have been so inspiration in my life, who always cared for me and remember your joy in hearing about Tobias. You will never be forgotten and always be loved by all of us, with your memories living on forever. Love ‘Your kid’ xxx
