Prof Sir Eldryd Hugh Owen Parry KCMG helped established the first medical school in Northern Nigeria at ABU Zaria in the 1960s through which generations of medical doctors and specialists have been produced who in turn helped established so many medical schools in the country as well as trained so many healthcare professionals.Sir Eldryd had brought along with him Africa so many great physicians and academics who have contributed immensely in the development of tropical medicine and other related fields around the world.
As a young medical student as well as a postgraduate resident doctor in internal medicine in Nigeria Sir Eldryd Parry’s text book of Medicine ‘ Principle of Medicine in Africa’ was very handy and instructive in understanding common medical conditions in Africa and the tropics as well. Although I had heard a lot about Sir Eldryd (both as a medical student and subsequently a resident doctor); I first met him about ten years ago as a DTM&H student at LSHTM, he told me then that he was still communicating with the family of his late chauffeur at ABU Zaria in Nothern Nigeria after about 30 years of relocating to the UK. Sir Eldryd Parry has been very inspirational in my entire professional and academic career particularly in the field of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases, his well cherished memory will continue to linger on in our hearts for a long time to come and he will be indeed missed greatly. My heartfelt and sincere condolences to his immediate family, his friends, colleagues and the Tropical Health and Education Trust as well.
