Eldryd will be a light in this world forever. Always an encouraging word or a wry smile, I am so saddened by his passing. From poetry to pandemics, Eldryd always knew just the right thing to say to inspire optimism on even the darkest of days. He was an inspiration to so many and his legacy and impact on the world will live on.
Years ago we sat together in his office at the RSM, while we both should have been working and read the words of Maya Angelou in her poem "When Great Trees Fall" and its words have run through my mind since I heard the news:
When great trees fall, rocks on distant hills shudder, lions hunker down in tall grasses, and even elephants lumber after safety.
...
And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed.
