Robert Slavin

17 september 1950 - 24 april 2021

Dr. Slavin, affectionately known as Bob to all who worked with him, was fully committed to improving public education one student, one classroom, one school at time, as was demonstrated by his life’s work. In every conversation, in every writing, his passion for the mission of educational reform and evidence based learning was apparent. We have lost a great friend and visionary and the world of education has lost a leader whose impact will continue for decades to come.

Bob was my Ph.D. advisor. I will always remember him for his humor, kindness, and constant support. When I rated myself below average on the Individual Development Plan, he was so concerned that he called me just to tell me that I am an exemplary student. He had a way to make those around him feel unique and appreciated. It's still really hard to accept the fact that he is gone, but his unwavering faith to help students will carry on forever.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Bob on one occasion, when he and Nancy visited those schools within Unity Schools Partnership in Suffolk, England, who use Success for All. In that one meeting he conveyed to us, his absolute passion for trying to eradicate early literacy deficit. A genuine and humble man, his legacy will live long into the future, as Success for All provides generations to come with a real opportunity to succeed in life. Thank you for all you've done, Bob. We will miss you.

Bob had a way of making you feel so valued. A couple of weeks ago, a few of us who were presenting at AERA did mock presentations during our lab meeting. After giving kind and constructive advice, Bob says, "You know they should shut down the rest of AERA and just have you guys present, that was fantastic!" These were the kinds of things he said on a regular basis, and all of his students were more confident and better researchers for it.

Bob Slavin (the never-ending fountain of inspiration) and Nancy Madden (the never-failing woman who made it all happen) gave us the jobs of a lifetime and shared with us their passion for making every school the best it could be and giving all children the opportunity and education they deserve. It was challenging and frustrating and rewarding in ways we could never have anticipated as we moved to Baltimore at the beginning of our marriage in 1990. Our paths diverged in 2004, but Success for All gave us opportunities to learn and grow just as it has for more than two million children and thousands of teachers and principals and school districts. I so deeply hope that their visions, made real by the many, many dedicated people who worked with them over the years continue to develop and enhance the professional field of education and, more importantly, the education of poor kids throughout the world. I can’t write it as well as Sam would have. But I hope your fountain has sprung leaks across and throughout the furthest fields and ranges of Education, from which we may all refresh ourselves and prepare for the next legs of the journey. In loving, respectful memory of Bob: on behalf of Sam and myself, Kathleen Stringfield.

Bob put into practice what I knew in my heart to be true that we can improve public education. He was committed to making education accessible to every child. I am honored to have worked with Bob for eight informative years and continue to put into practice what I learned. He will be greatly missed.

I have worked for Bob for more than half of my life, and he was always, consistently, committed to making the world a better place for kids who deserved a quality education. He will be greatly missed.

When good, kind people are taken too soon, it doesn’t quite seem real or right. Bob was a genuinely honest and humble advocate for quality education for all students. I am so saddened by this loss and offer my deepest condolences to Nancy, the family and all of those who knew Bob. He always had a kind word to say and was never too busy to chat about the projects we worked on. I know we will all miss his conversation and the intelligent, sometimes humorous, insights Bob shared. Rest in peace, dear friend, and know that your legacy will live on.
