Sir Manuel served as Belize’s second Prime Minister under the United Democratic Party from 1984-1989 and served another term from1993-1998. Sir Manuel was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council by Queen Elizabeth II in 1986 and conferred the title Right Honourable.

    On behalf of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the people of Belize and Esquivel family, on the passing of the former two-term Prime Minister, Sir Manuel Esquivel. He will be remembered as a great educator, politician, and leader as his decade of public service will be a lasting legacy. The High Commission of Republic of India to Belize is deeply saddened to learn about the sad demise of Right Honorable Sir Manuel Esquivel, former PM of Belize and convey our condolences to the government and people of Belize on his demise. Sir Esquivel's contributions to Belize and the formation of the nation shall always be treasured. India established diplomatic relations with Belize under his leadership and we remember him as a close friend of India who greatly contributed to strengthening of India-Belize bilateral relations.
