Ralf Steudel

A lot of people have known him as a big scientist, especially a sulfur chemist. Once he was lecturing at the University of Urbana-Champaign, IL, and he was introduced in a nice manner ""S" in the periodic System Stands for Steudel". It felt like that for many. He was a known text-book author, an incredible teacher. But first of all, he was an amazing person. He was generous, he was humorous, he was very critical (!) and he was such a loving person.

He stressed the importance of fundamental research and the need for critical evaluation of one’s own conclusions. He belonged to the generation, who could master widely the whole field of inorganic chemistry and who could utilize this knowledge in his own research. He will always remain as a best example of how research should be conducted. His impact goes beyond the extensive research work he has published himself, because he has educated a large number of inorganic chemists, who keep carrying the torch.
