Luca Modric. The world has truly lost one of the good guys this weekend and whilst I am heartbroken for Luke and Karen's family, I am heartened by all of the love and support seen below. We can all take note and learn about what true strength and resilience is all about from Luke. What he has been through over the past couple of years is nothing short of remarkable and is humbling. Heeding the messages on this site I decided to trawl back through my text messages and saw the last proper conversation we had a couple of months ago was around the time he was going into a hospice for some treatment. That was his opening gambit but he quickly moved on (in this order) to ask about my daughter and wife, tell my how a Spaniard was messing his football club up and tips for the stag do in Tenerife I was going on. He didn't let any of his issues get in the way of being positive, caring and sharing and that is how I will always remember Luke. From the day I first interviewed him in 2013 I knew he was special (I know that because when I asked him to rank himself out of 10, without thinking he just blurted out 9!). We worked closely on new business clients in the pensions team for 18 months and it was great to see him promoted to pensions technical manager, a role he just took in his stride in true Luke fashion. He was ambitious - he always wanted to kick on to the next promotion until his illness cut his career short but I can tell you with his ability, his attitude, his people skills and his ability to manage up (!) he would have made that promotion of that I have no doubt. We will never know now but one thing I do know is that I have lost a great colleague, a great bloke and a true friend. Rest easy Luca Modric - you are at peace now xxx
