Lia van Leer

8 augustus 1924 - 13 maart 2015

Our beloved movie star, Lia van Leer, has passed away Her love of cinema, her commitment to optimism, and her power of conviction were all part of her persona and the foundations upon which she established the Jerusalem Cinematheque: a world-renowned pluralistic and liberal establishment that is committed to enriching Jerusalem and Israel's cultural life. In her white and purple garb, with generosity, and a constant smile, Lia was a leading figure in the world of cinema. She paved the way for the local film industry and brought us the very best filmmakers and films from around the world. Lia established the Israel Film Archive and for decades lead the Jerusalem Cinematheque with fierce determination. But above all, Lia served as a guide and teacher to generations of filmmakers and film lovers. Lia dedicated her life to the love of cinema, and her life was a celebration of this love. Noa Regev, Director of the Jerusalem Cinematheque: “I will miss her very much, she was a constant source of inspiration and hope in my life. For so many years, she served as a leading figure in Israel's cultural life. She will be missed by us all.”

I owe to Lia and her team my first visit to Israel in 81 with the first moroccan film she dared to show " Transes" followed more invitations at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, the latest one in 2012. With Lia we shared cinematographic emotions from Cannes to Rotterdam, Chicago... and all the festivals she would keenly assist. I'll miss her familiar and elegant figure now off camera but surely not off screen. May you rest in peace, Lia. My warmest regards to all my friends from the Jerusalem Cinematheque. Izza Genini
