As a dormant honorary member after GA Hong Kong 2004, I had not been involved so actively as I had wished, and had only known of but not had the privilege of knowing Jos de Goey personally, let alone working with him in his arduous role as the Vice President for Strategic Affairs. Everything changed abruptly and affably at the Strategic Action Plan opt-in meeting Hong Kong in July 2018.
On the first day during the buffet lunch at the Excelsior Hotel, this handsome man surprised me pleasantly by coming around to take a picture of me for Dr Cees Beuk and send me his best regards. I was deeply impressed by his charisma, cordiality and comradeship.
Again he happened to sit next to me at the farewell dinner and started to enthuse the other younger WorldSkillers around the table unashamedly with his unremitting dedication to WorldSkills' vision and mission, by vividly encapsulating how he had founded the EuroSkills and per force become its first President. His vivacious, witty and earnest talk not only overwhelmed us the listeners, but also flamed any tiny sparks of ambition into a conflagration of desire for emulation if at all possible.
In August 2019, I was gratified to learn that WorldSkills had found the right President again to carry the baton, an onerous task only people with great minds and efforts like him are ready, willing and able to embark on.
It is therefore an unconsolable loss, not only to his family, but to WorldSkills, all his friends, co-workers, partners and WorldSkillers around the world. My heartfelt condolences and sympathies are to his family. Rest assured he will always be remembered by all of us !
